How much difference between #10 & #1 on google

Hey, a grey question I know... i'm just looking for a ballpark idea of how much more traffic one can expect from being at #1 on google as opposed to somwhere around the bottom of page 1...

Is the marginal difference worthwhile enough to be putting resources into getting to #1 instead of perhaps getting a new project up and ranking?

Very grey i know... not expecting a clear cut answer, just thoughts...

  • There is already a significant difference between position #3 or #2 and #1! Its WELL worth it even if you are somewhere in the middle on page #1 to shoot higher.

  • Ive had a few times where I could actually see this with a few different keywords.

    When it was number 1 I was getting around 250 u/v a day. When it dropped to number 10 I was getting around 15 a day.

    Funny thing is when I was number 11 it was actually better than number 10.

    • Same here - top of the second page is eye catching, but it's at least a 4K difference in income monthly from being on the first page above the fold. At least.

      In my niche people order multiple items for the top 5 positions and then single items for anything after that.

      Blows.
    • Yes, being the top of page 2 can often bring in more visitors then being bottom of page 1. The reason being people generally scan down so far on page one and skip to page 2 before reaching the bottom. A little mental I know but its true.

      Being number 1 or at least being in the top 3 will always bring you more visitors then being at the bottom of page 1. The higher the better.

    I've got a few sites/pages on the frontpage of google for different niches and even more way down the ladder

    I can tell you that the sites/pages on the front page do a whole lot better in the organic searches then the others

    As for #1 vs #10 I "think" it makes a big difference. But if you narrow that down to #1 vs #3 it really won't.

  • The difference is massive.

    Regardless of how much traffic.

    The bigger the traffic is for the keyword,the bigger the margin will be.

    it is always worth the extra effort to get #1, imho.

    • You always have to quantify these responses.
      I have a feeling that wikipedia, amazon, etc. are
      ignored by a lot of searchers. And even some others.
      I am one who actually looks at the sites I'm going to
      click on. I'd say it's about evenly split for me to
      look and click on at least the top 5-6.

      You need to talk about value as well. Blind clickers
      on #1 may not give you the same value as someone
      who reads and chooses your site at position #10.

      Overall, we can spit out stats like 60-70% click on
      #1, 20% #2, 10% #3, then next to nothing for the
      rest. But I always want to toss in value and the
      intellect of the searcher. Seriously, on a lot of
      my searches I'm even going to page 3.

      Anywhere in the top 10 you have a good chance.
      Anywhere in the top 30, you have at least a chance.

      Get yourself in the top 30 and keep working.

  • Ive seen a 30% traffic spike with #1 for some keywords.
  • Although this also depends on the other results(how relevant their titles and descriptions are), I read that 70% + of the traffic goes to the site at no 1. Also, If I remember correctly, its better to be at no 11 than no 10.

    I have seen a ton of different variations of reports that claim hard percentages for positioning in Google and the traffic you will get. Of course it is different for every keyword, but this is known. The #1 position will get the majority of clicks, and it drops exponentially from there.

  • Google Webmaster Tools will give you numbers.

    Across my keywords sites' at positions 6 - 10 get a CTR of 3% average. #1 is closer to 60%.

    in Google images, you will find your answer.
  • I agree with Paul, its the value of your visitor that counts. Of course thats based on your niche also.Either way, whether your visitor is a surfer or a professional searcher, you need to provide value. If you don't you could be a # 1 and still not have many conversions.

    The trick is to build 3-5 sites on the same niche and dominating the first page instead of just having one spot in the top ten.
  • HUGE difference and I can attest to this. I saw a huge jump even just jumping from #2 to #1 but the real key is to rank up at #1 or close to it for a variety of keywords. That will get you way more exposure.
  • If you have a catchy meta headlines then you can surely get attention if you are #10 also. Remember people don't start clinking on the links right away after the SERP is displayed.

    So you can get a good CTR even if you are #10.

    • This is true also. Although you need to focus on specific keywords, if you are number 2 and you have a better, more descriptive title and description tag then you MAY get more clicks than the site above you.

      It's like most things. It's a process.........

      1) To rank high.

      2) To attract them to click, ie - title, description and url.

      3) Quality of landing / sales page, video etc to convert.

      4) A combination of the 3 above points = sales.

      5) Quality of product will usually result in less refunds etc.

      Nail ALL of the above and you will likely have a successfull online busines. Then rinse and repeat whilst maintaining what you have already achieved.

  • I would say #1 is getting 10 times more traffic compare to #10. However, the funny is #10 is slightly better than #9
  • There was some leaked info a few years back (I outlined it in more detail in a linkbuilding ebook I did), and the stats show that #1 gets around 40% of the clicks.

    That tells you all you need to know.
  • You cannot talk in numbers about this as is is completely dependant on the words you are searching for. you cannot honestly believe the number of searches for "Warrior" and the same as "My Grannies Old Grey Hat".

    As for the number of times between 1 and 10, again it is completely down to so many factors like page description showing in the search results, page url, etc, etc as number 1 might have some dodgy wordpress generated description with the date in it ad number 2 may have well written targeted description and therefore get more interest than number 1.

    All you can do is your absolute best to cover every point of SEO onpage and offpage you can and then you've done your bit. there are so many people out there not doing well at SEO making it easier than you think, even when up against some of the big sites

  • Yep huge difference!

    I also noticed this recently when my site jumped from Position 3 to 1 and then back again. The jump in stats is crazy and thats in the top 3!
