I've been reading a lot about people asking about article directories. I thought i would share my favorites and a little blurb why i like them. I use all of them and use them for different reasons.
  • Ezinearticles.com - Most popular IMO, lots of a traffic and google seems to eat it up and is constantly crawling the site.
  • Rysite.com- SEO friendly, automatically tweets your articles to a targeted following. I normally see double the traffic from not only the article but also from twitter.
  • Articlealley.com- another popular site for article directories. Has a high Page Rank and all of my articles refer traffic to my site.
  • Articledashboard.com- Another site that seems to be very popular and is constantly crawled by google. Also has a decent Page Rank and SEO friendly structure
Anyone else have some that they can add? What are your favorites and why?

    eZineArticles and ArticlesBase.
Both send a lot of direct traffic.
In addition to this, eZineArticles has dofollow links.

Ezine articles has seemed to outperform all the other article directories combined for me as far as generating traffic goes.

However, I diversify my article directory submissions to also get back backlinks for ranking purposes.

      Hope this helps.

I have a quick question on posting an article to multiple article sites.

        Doesn't Google dislike duplicate content?

I've kept my article posting to one original article per site because of the above rule, but not sure how true it is.

Thanks for pointing this out,I forgot to clear this up. I am not submitting the same article. If I am writing about "cars," I'll either write a different article for each directory or I will spin my best article.

Don't worry about duplicate content. It is a myth. Google only penalize duplicate content across one site, not across the internet.

          Hello Jose,

I primarily submit articles on EzinesArticles.com... occasionally on GoArticles.com.

The keys to using articles submissions to promote your site and minimize the affects of duplicate content IMO are as follows:

          1) Write a blog post or article for your own site. This should be a detailed discussion of whatever topic you're wanting to rank for. My blog posts are usually around 1500-2500 words for any given topic. Post this on your site.

          2) Write from scratch a totally separate article to be submitted to ezinearticles.com about the same topic as the one your posted on your site. While this article may have the same basic outline (subsections) as the one on your site, do NOT even look at the post/article on your site when writing this second article. You want it to be totally unique. Make this article less detailed while covering the same topic. My submitted articles are typically 700-1200 words in length. Submit this article to ONLY one submission site. In the author bio box (where the links are actually followed) I link to the article on my site with something like "Learn more about <insert targeted keyword phrase> by visiting example.com." This will get click-thrus if the visitor wants more details on the topic which can only be found on your site.

          3) If you want to submit to multiple submission sites then repeate step 2 above writing a totally unique article about the same topic for EACH site you plan to submit to.

By following the above steps... you ensure that there is only ONE copy of the post/article that exists on your site. NEVER EVER submit the same post/article that you put on your site to an article submission site.

By using a totally different (and less detailed) article for each submission site, that submitted article is not a duplicate of the one that exists on your site. Multiple sites may republish your submitted article, but who cares... The content they are duplicating is the content from the article submission site... not the content from your site.

Don't worry, Google doesn't like duplicate content on the same domain. Distribute your articles to as many article directories as you like.

Your welcome! I've noticed a lot of my articles getting tons of traffic because of Rysite.com's twitter automation. Especially with my articles that have a more catchy title, the twitter followers seem to love it and I can see their referrals in my analytics.

    EZA.

The only EZA's drawback is it may takes 5-6 days before your articles get approved.

About the others, I just don't have time to send my articles over to other directories, which makes me feels like I probably leave out some traffic on the table.

Ezine seems to be the only one I really see traffic from but I have not been using Buzzle and Article City for that long. Not sure of the SEO benefits.

People who know me call me an impatient SOB, but I cannot understand why people worry so much about a few days or so it takes to get articles on Ezine...

With a Platinum membership, they are usually up in about 24 hours. If you do not have one and would really like to get your articles up quickly, I would suggest applying with as a new writer. With my first membership, they never upgraded me even after about 40 articles. When I started a new membership, they gave it to me after the first ten articles even though I did not think they were that good.

Seems to be at least partially the luck of the draw.

I do my best to either write multiple articles or spin them very very well so that it is almost hard to tell that it isnt spun.

Additionally, you might not have a choice when it comes down to a single article appearing on multiple directories. Lots of article directories either scrape or pull articles from other sites and post it on theirs. You might see some dups whether you did it or not.

If you are just submiting to no more than 10 article directories, doing it manually is fine.
If you are mass submitting them, use some kind of automatic submission service. However, do it always manually to the more republe directories (EZN, articlebase, goarticles).

          Hey Ernie,

I like to submit them manually, it does take time but it assures me that it is done properly and that backlinks are built at my own pace. I think this appears more natural too, not to mention the fact that they are submitted to only the higher quality directories. No sense in autosubmitting to 1000 spammed to death directories.

Remember diversity! Submit 100 spread out through all the directories in this thread, don't just submit 100 to one then 100 to another as it won't benefit you.

Beside EzinArticles, I would like to mention eHow.com, HubPages.com and UKpressReleases.co.uk. All the articles that I placed in those got indexed in under a 7 day, with a minimum input from me. Quick indexing is always a sign that G. respects a site.

In contrast to the above, it took two articles that I published on Squidoo.com more than 50 days to get indexed, in spite to a heavy back linking, soc. bookmarking etc. I would stay away from Squidoo.com.

Articlesbase is another great one, had good success with it...

How about Buzzle? That's another great directory to add to the list of strongs...

Go Articles is definitely another prominent one..

The trick is to perhaps work it in tandem and miz it up a little bit so that Google will see different sources of traffic and hence love your links and site...

    Good Luck!

I haven't worked with eHow? Do they pay or is it only an article directory? Is there an editorial process?

Same question from me. There seems to be a difference in opinion based on whether the article is written to draw visitors or increase PR.

I'm trying to increase PR so nofollow links won't work for me. Does anyone have some recommendations for dofollow article sites? I'm trying to create a pyramid like this: http://senuke.com/bubblus_RandURL.jpg

Personally because I've had several articles rank well and bring me traffic. Which is important besides only a backlink. I will be honest though, I have started using other directories more frequently.

Wanted to add my few cents after doing a bunch of blasts.

Rysite.com is one of my new favorites. I've had a lot of my articles approved in a matter of minutes. Not bad for a human reviewed article directory. Fast fast indexing and backlinks show up quickly in Yahoo.

ArticleSnatch has instant approval, although many of my earlier submissions have yet to be indexed (and I've sent some links to them)

Buzzle - I'm sorry, I just can't find the fascination with this one. Too much work and not very scalable.

Ezine - As long as it's not garbage you are submitting, you should be golden. Still a favorite.

A few notes about the list that SubSe7en gave us a little while ago.

Saching - NO HTML, therefore no backlinks. I'd avoid this one
ArticleCity - No anchor text, you can only use absolute URLs. Also submission approval states that it takes 15-30 days to review
ArticleBiz - Requires NO signup, which is nice
ArticleBlast - AVOID - Requires account approval!
Zchand - Instant approval which is nice, but it's based off of wordpress which isn't my favorite for an article directory

Thought this may help a few people

Alright this is getting really frustrating.

Where are the article directories that have quick approval process? I have some articles that I submitted over three weeks ago to directories and they still haven't been approved!

Anyone have a list of directories that have instant, or rather within a week, approval process?

Thanks for all the great info! I'm relatively new to article submissions, and SEO in general. But, have been using EzineArticles and Goarticles.

After reading this thread, I decided to try Rysite. Does that site take a little longer to be indexed by Google than the others I mentioned? I just noticed I couldn't find my article through a google search, while with the other 2 sites, I could very quickly. Just wondered if this was the norm.

I've had good indexing results with Rysite.com. My article was indexed in about 48 or so hours, give or take. That's really not bad at all.

Nice list on DirectoryCritic. I've noticed that A1Articles seems to post on other sites as well. Kinda a nice bonus (although it is dupe content).

Articlebase.com & Rysite.com & Ezinearticles.com seem to be those that have resulted in the most value so far in terms of SERPs.

          Hey Irnes,

Thanks for the link, although I'd say that you should probably go through and update the list. Most of those article directories are either very slow for approval, or make you jump through some pretty crazy hoops to get you to have a live article on their sites.

Just my $0.02, I also originally used a very similar list when first starting out with article submissions and only a few of those are still on my "must do" list.

Ezine takes a long time for me. i'm not a VIP member or anything, but it does seem to take a very long time just to get them approved. Articlebase is pretty quick and I have had rysite.com take only a few hours to have my articles submitted.

The problem with rysite in my opinion is that there tweeting service isn't anything to brag about at this point. They only have 42 followers and their traffic is not too great for an article directory.

                Rysite Directory (rysite) on Twitter

It's a great concept but they should definitely try to build up that twitter account of theirs it's the highlight of the site in my opinion.

Although I was confused by that at first as well, that apparently is not the twitter account that the articles get syndicated through. I emailed the guy and asked him. He said that was just for testing reasons to make sure the articles were syndicated and was supposed to be to for users to follow the actual site in the future, and not the articles.

Squidoo is more like a site for pages. Have you been uploading articles as individual pages or multiple articles on each lens?

Do you send links to your squidoo account? What is your method for using squidoo?

I'll chime in here since it looks like the other member was banned. I like to send backlinks from Article Directories to other Web 2.0 properties like Squidoo and Hubpages to make those properties as strong as possible, and then link to my money site.

It somewhat depends on your strategy, Hubpages and Squidoos will rank better out of the gate then a small domain. You can basically "hijack" the power of those domains and rank for medium competition keywords.

Another question while on the topic of article directories.

How many article directories do you post to? Let's say you're promoting a money page, isn't it better to promote them to as many "respected" directories as possible?

Or do you still use just 2 or 3?

Buzzle is my favorite, if I'm looking to build their public relations and traffic to a page. My articles seem to get a PR 2-3 after only three months or less compared with a full year in the electronic edition.

If you use an article submitter presumably that submits the same article to lots of different sites. Several people seem to be saying that you submit to ezine first and then to other sites. Can this be done with an article submitter??

Also some people are saying to spin the article before submitting it to differnt article sites. This all seems very confusing - is there a rule of thumb that is easy to follow regarding whether or not you can submit the same article to multiple sites???

Thanks for this great post. I have several of these article sites bookmarked now. To be honest, I only knew about Ezine.

So here's a total newb question...do you link back to yourself in the article with your desired keyword or in the sig box?

  • You dont need a lot of article directories for your article marketing. Maintaining 2 or 3 directories is enough. There is no point sending an article to thousands of article directories. Most of these directories are useless, in addition to the fact that you would be creating duplicate content sending your articles to all of them

Ezine Articles #1 for me and then Article Base - but will have to check out that Rysite - the tweeting bonus looks good as they claim to targeted twitter accounts.
