I have site that was getting 30+ visits per day. It was starting to make some money and then bam!!! It drop out of site on google searches. A few weeks later it came back, but lower in the ranks for the same keywords. 2 days later gone again! The week or two later it's back and so on. It keeps going back and forth. Most of the time it's invisible on Google.

WHY? Is this the Google dance? I have experienced the dance before when I dropped in the ranks a little and then it climbs. But This totally disappears for a coulple weeks then it comes back.

Any ideas/advice??

I appreciate it!

  • Hi RKW,

I had the same scenario with one of my WordPress websites at the end of 2009. I first made the site live in October 2009 and within the first 3 weeks it arrived at page 2 of Google out of around 1,500,000 results. I was getting some 50/75 visitors per day and all of a sudden it disappeared down a black hole. It came back again around 2 months later. During the intervening period I continued to add content and a few backlinks. Whether this was the the thing that Google was looking for I don't know but it seems to have done the trick as it is now on page 1 and is getting around 100 visitors daily.
I keep on adding content and the odd backlink along with posts.
The site is also currently at number one on Yahoo and is now making some returns, cash wise.
I have carried out the same content / backlink / post strategy on several of my new websites and they are all doing well exept one which has'nt returned from it's black hole yet.

I'm convinced that, give Google what it wants by way of content, some good backlinks etc and it will oblige with a good result.

I always use Market Samuri for back link information as I find it very easy to use and that it presents the results in an understandable way.

Give your website a bit more time and maybe do some of the thinks mentioned above.

    Good luck,
    BillB
  • Thanks for the input. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one...sorry it happened to you. I have done as you said. I added a site map, contact page, more content, more backlinks etc. It has been in and out at least 4 or 5 times in the past few months. I guess I will stay the course and just keep adding content and backlinks, etc. Maybe it will eventually stick.

    Thanks again.

    • Also consider targeting long tail keywords with less competitions in search engines.
    • RKWebster, welcome to the club! I had a Superhero site which I made a year back. Added very quality backlinks from other superhero sites ranging anywhere from PR2 to PR5. Lots and lots of content including wallpaper gallery, superhero bio and history, artist gallery, comics, toys, statues, news, dvds, etc, etc.
Often at times it was sitting pretty somewhere in the top 100 for its main keyword. My main keyword which I was trying to rank for had about 20 million pages in competition. Pretty crazy I know! I took the challenge to beat out the other 19,999,999 sites to get to that #1 which was darn near impossible. The highest I ever got was #71 on Google. Often at times I was sitting comfortably somewhere in the top 100, other times the site would disappear from the face of Google altogether only to end up somewhere in postion #492 or #621. LOL!
Then it would reappear back in the top 100. Really strange! All we can do I guess is just work the SEO, create more backlinks, etc. I had paid a dude on here hundreds for his so-called SEO services but he took my money and vanished from the face of the earth. Typical. If you need some advice, make sure the guy you hire to do your SEO is within driving distance so you can pay him a visit if he thinks about taking your money.

  • Sounds like the Google dance, I usually experience this when I'm going after very competitive keywords and just recently added some powerful backlinks to the site. It should stop bouncing around after a little while.

    cheers!
  • I also think you could be looking at google's caffeine crap. In the past google would take up to four months to put a site on the general index although it would "index" it right away. Now with this caffeine crap the sites are indexed and added to the general index right away.
But, if there is some news on the same item as someone's keyword, the website will take second place to the news item.
Go check out this blog for more good info on this: Google Caffeine – What Does It Mean To YOU? | PotPieGirls Blog (PotPieGirl.com)

My thing about google is, keep up with good content, and keep an eye on the news. If there is something related to your blog or website, go ahead and add a blurb about it there so the search engine has no excuse to downgrade your site.

    Good luck to us all.
  • MrDay & jcepeda,
Thanks for the input. I am encouraged and I appreciate the tips about the caffeine ssue. I will dig into it some more.

    Cheers
  • Google use to love me, but now where are going through a rough patch. It seems Google has an interest in other websites, the two timing expletive :-(
  • I have experienced weird things with my sites as well, and I know for sure it has got nothing to do with a Google dance.

I have sites up to 1 years old that have been affected, I made a post about this here:

  • This is absolutely typical. Your problem is likely a weak back link profile. Just continue to build links to your pages using their targeted keyword phrases as the link text, preferably from relevant sites, and your rankings should stablize over time.

    • I had 2,500 + backlinks to this site that were builtover a few months time (maily by me). I started getting some 1st page ranking for some less competitive keywords and so I ordered 2,000 more backlinks by outsorcing. Before they new BL's were complete is when my site dropped. Since then the BL's were complete after the site dropped. So I doubled the amout of backlinks and added content, sitemap, etc. It keeps re-appearing for about 2 days at a time then drops again.

Can you expand on weak backlink profile?

      Thanks!
