NoFollow Tags

I made this post on another thread but I figured I would start its own thread and see if anyone else has had this happen.........here's the post.

I did an interesting test about a month ago. I have a client who is in a very small niche. Her website was created about 4 years ago without any seo in mind. In fact for this very small niche it did not even show up in the first 300 search results.

I then started making 3 blog comments per day on NOFOLLOW blogs only, some with the targeted keywords for the anchor text in the name filed, some with just my name.

I did this religiously for every day for about three weeks, 3 comments a day.

Now my clients site in #1 on page 1 for the targeted keywords. Nothing changed on the website, zero, no on page optimization, no new content.

Now obviously because this is an ultra small niche it was much easier to move the site up in the Serps, but I now know that in terms of Serps, the "nofollow" tag has no relevance as far as I'm concerned, it might in terms of PageRank but I wasn't interested in that.

    Nofollow only effects pagerank and has nothing to do with SERPS.
  • There's a lot of people that have noticed that nofollow links actually help with rankings. It doesn't make any sense since Google says that they don't count. However, I think sometimes they count nofollow links as real links because the bot messes up. It's hard to say, but you're not the only one that has said this. In the past, I would try not to get nofollow links, but now it doesn't even matter to me. If it's nofollow, I'd still get it because you just dont know if they're going to be counted or not.

    • Nofollow and dofollow are only for page rank, and not for rankings. Sometimes they get counted by other search engine links, and keep weight on serp rankings. So finally, both are useful to us.
  • I think the bots recognize the link and the anchor text but simply don't let pagerank flow plus I'm sure they don't follow the link to my site. But the connection between the keyword, the site the link is placed on (relevance) and my site is taken into consideration by google.............i think

    • PR does have something to do with SERPs.
      What sites google considers first is based on
      PR. A higher PR site will be considered first.
      But that doesn't mean a lower PR site will
      not beat a higher PR site. You need to be more
      relevant.

      But don't think all those no follow links somehow
      pushed you to the top. They didn't.

      High PR non-no follow links are light years more
      valuable than no follow ones.

      As stated, backlinks are a vote. The more votes, the
      more you are considered. But it does not mean you
      win each. I have a zillion no follow links as well. But in one
      website of mine, it's my 4 high PR backlinks that have
      shot me to top, not the gazillion no follow ones.

      You can have a #1 site with no backlinks. What does
      that prove? Nothing.

  • I promoted a site with all nofollw backlinks from only high pr pages, as a result my site developed a PR of 3.

    • No follow has nothing to do with indexing or crawling.
      It has to do with passing PR to a link. That's it.
      No more no less.

      no follow neither prevents nor causes a site to be crawled or indexed.
      That's entirely up to google to decide. My sites get indexed because
      google wants to index them. no follow does not prevent crawling nor
      indexing. That's not what the tag was created by google for.

  • I have read in some articles before that no follow tags is not considered useless when it comes to SEO.. I guess Google tends to mess up reading the tags which result to helping them in indexing site... So do you think it is much better to use both no follow and do follow in building site?
  • How did you determine it was number one? Are you sure that you are not looking at the Google personalization of the search results and its only number one for you?

    • Thanks for the heads up cbpayne, but I am aware of the personalisation and know not to be signed in when searching, thanks.

      Oh and it showed up#1 on 7 different pcs all on separate IPs

  • Everything has a benefit which you can avail. No-follow links can make your site reach to the top but if there is a lot of competition then you can't make your website to reach position 1 with only no-follow links. You have to find do-follow links as well...

  • no follow neither has the relevance for the SERPs neither It has relevancy to the PR of the page it is only good for attracting relevant traffic

  • I suspected this nofollow not being useless, this thread confirms my thoughts. Would be nice to do a test someday!

    • So what do you think caused it to get up from over #300 to #1 ?

      As the OP said, the only changes made were these no-follow links. I'm thinking it wasn't 3 months extra domain age, but then what, if not the links?


      How do you know for sure it was just your 4 high PR backlinks that pushed you over the top?
  • I think nofollow links are usefull for SERP if the niche is small enough. In my country there are not many dofollow blogs so I think SERP do look at the anchor text and give them weight. And because there aren't any competitors they rank high on the anchor text even though it is nofollow
  • According to Matt Cutts Google engineer it wont pass on link juice nor page rank...however, that is what he says but there are many things that he will never share due to protecting the SERPs which is understandable...

  • Threads like these just go to show exactly how much BAD information exists out there. Unfortunately, there are plenty of so-called "experts" who share bad information (such as "nofollow links are useless for SEO") and people believe it.

    • That's why I just linked two previous threads which this whole NoFollow vs. DoFollow thing was beaten to death. There is a lot of bad information circulating the Internet concerning both... If only people would actually listen to what Google says... Lol.
