Why the linkwheel and all these different sites?

I was wondering, you hear a lot about the linkwheel and posting once at all these different web 2.0 sites. But why the variety?

What if you just focused on one, say hubpages, and focused on creating good content for that community, then linking to your site from there. Is it really necessary to have 10 different sites so you can do a linkwheel?

It depends on what you are going for. If you are focused on a community, then focusing on one could yield more benefits than the other. A link wheel is built for IP diversification though and works for organic search. Plus, if done right, you could theoretically grab multiple spots on a long tail keyword phrase.

Personally, I am with you on focusing on one community though. With a link wheel, the only purpose is to build link equity and therefore is not meant for anyone other than the search engines to see. Becoming a relevant source in a community that is active is much better in establishing authority within your market though.
