Finding keywords.. Exact vs. Broad !

Hello,

I just read a thread which I found very interestering, actually I have read hundreds of these threads. Anyway.. The thread was about how to find keywords, and the thing I'm wondering about is...

Marketers with a lot of experience is telling the "newbies", that when they wan't find keywords with google's keyword tool, or any other tool, they should search for "EXACT MATCH" to get the best and most accurate results.

I just used the google keyword tool - because I wanted to test something.. I tested some of my domains.. Actually I tested 2 of the websites in my signature..

Tidsforskel.dk
Pandekageropskrift.dk

The keywords for these 2 are "Tidsforskel" & "Pandekager opskrift"...

So... I typed these 2 keywords into the keyword tool, and searched for exact and broad matches..

Pandekager opskrift:
EXACT: 9.900 Global Matches
EXACT: 0 Local Matches
BROAD: 18.100 Global Matches
BROAD: 14.800 Local Matches

Tidsforskel:
EXACT:
1.600 Global matches
EXACT: 0 Local Matches
BROAD: 8.100 Global Matches
BROAD:
8.100 Local Matches

So according to google NO ONE in Denmark is searching for ONLY "tidsforskel" or "pandekager opskrift", but around the world there is 9.900 and 1.600 which is searching for those keywords only!

Tidsforskel.dk is getting 200 visitors per day for the keyword "tidsforskel" alone, ALL of these are from Denmark.

Pandekageropskrift.dk is getting 500 visitors per day for the keyword "pandekager opskrift" alone, ALL of these are from Denmark.

So what can I and you guys use this for? Well.. If I was going for exact matches only - I wouldn't buy these domains for sure! This would according to google and a bunch of experiences marketers be a waste of time! Why buy or try to rank for something that isn't searched for?

Annd remember - I'm not even number 1 for these websites! Tidsforskel.dk is ranked number 2 and pandekageropskrift.dk is ranked number 6.. And still I'm getting a lot of visitors! I've got some articles on both sites, but they are not counted in - because if I count them in, then 200 and 500 visitors per day would be a huge mistake

Anyway... I wan't to discuss this! I wan't the input from all of you - especially experienced marketers too, which is a fan of the "exact match"-thing!

So... Discuss

      Hi Wi,

There are a number of possible reasons you are seeing a discrepancy. Perhaps if we can know some specifics about how your data was collected we may find the reason.

How did you determine that your traffic is coming from those exact keywords? How did you filter the traffic from long tail keywords verses your exact match? How did you determine all your traffic is coming from Denmark? What about Phrase match keywords, do they account for all the traffic you are seeing? How did you determine that your traffic came from searches on Google?

Google's AdWords Keyword Tool only reports data from their search engine, traffic from other sources are not included. If you selected Denmark as the location it will show traffic from Google.dk and not Google.com in the local traffic numbers. Could the traffic be coming from sources other than Google.dk?

    Thank you for your answer

I'm using statcounter for all my websites, because they have some nice and advanced analysis.

I took some screenshots so you can see what I mean..

The first screenshot which is under this sentence is the phrases people use to find my website. I didn't grap them all because that's a very long list. Anyway.. Here goes:

As you can see... 62.12 percent is searching for pandekager opskrift.

Now where in the world are these visitors from.. I mean what COUNTRY are they from.. Well, I got an answer for this to:

92.80 percent is from denmark.. Well okay.. Not EVERY SINGLE one is from Denmark as I said earlier..

How does these people find my website? I mean... Are they from bing, yahoo, google or other search engines? Well let's see:

Actually everyone is from google except 0.48 percent... So google is my primary source of traffic.

I took a screenshot of my latest visits.. And it looked like this:

This is for pandekageropskrift.dk - as you may have noticed I don't want to do the same thing for tidsforskel.dk and some other sites, but you get the point.

And my point is.. I bought this website although there was no searches according to google (local ofc...

This is a recipe-site btw.. (pancakes)

So... What do you think about this - other people are welcome to comment this as well, because I wan't to hear a lot of opinions on this..

This is not the only site I have where the "local"-counter is showing "0 searches" - I have a lot of these site - and still they are getting a bunch of visitors..

    Best Regards
    Wi

      Hi Wi,

When I looked at the data in the keyword tool I noticed that it doesn't show zero it just shows a dash. While this is normal, it just means that they have no data available.

So I got to wondering if there might be a reason that Google was not showing data for so many Denmark based searches. A quick search revealed some ongoing issues with Google and Denmark about revealing data. Perhaps this data is not meaningful due to the deletion of data at the insistence of the Danish government? I don't know if this is the case, I'm just asking. See the following link: Denmark asks Google to destroy sensitive data

Can somebody make clear what is Local Search Volume and Global Search Volume?

If i don't select country from Google Keyword Tool then what will Local Search Volume show? Nothing?

I think Local Search Volume is the amount of searches performed last month on Google and nothing else...

          Hi Boris_yo,

This is directly from Google's Keyword Tool:

          Global Monthly Searches
The approximate 12-month average of user queries for the keyword on Google.com and the Google Search Network. This data is specific to your Keyword Match Type selection

          Local Monthly Searches
If you specified a country or language for your search, this is the approximate 12-month average number of user queries for the keyword for those countries and languages. It is specific to your Keyword Match Type selection.
