Problem with FaceBook Ads

I am running some ads on FaceBook. I've originally got a good CTR of 0.03% (average is apparently 0.02%), but than nobody was converting. Practically I was just filling FB's pockets with my money, without getting anything back.

So I thought of making ads a bit discouraging, idea was to put off window shoppers, so that only really committed visitors click on ads. As planned, my CTR fell, but it fell to 0.00%. Now I have no problem with that, I can make ads a bit more encouraging again. But what happened, FaceBook severely reduced number of impressions. On day one number of impressions was 10,000, on day two 2,000 and today it is 2.

Does anybody knows if FaceBook has some sort of responsive algorithm that curtails ads with low CTR?

  • .03 is a pretty low CTR.

I generally look for a CTR of .1 at minimum or I pause the ad. If it is converting, I'll let it drop to .8, pause it, and reactivate it later to see if i can get the CTR back up.

I'm actually surprised you're getting very many impressions with a <.03 CTR. FB will definitely stop giving you impressions for a low CTR like that.

Sounds like you need stronger images and headlines, or better targetting, depending on your niche.

    • well, this is for life insurance. I guess if you are promoting mobile phones CTR would be much higher. It depends what product it is.

I read somewhere that average is 0.02%.

Anyway, do you think that they reduce number of impressions for low CTR ads?

  • Facebook ads are an utter waste of time and money, I can't believe people throw money at them.

The average facebook user is there to socialise and read their friends updates, they completely ignore adverts.

I recently asked (on facebook) how many people had even noticed facebook had adverts, and dozens of people on my friends list admitted they had never ever noticed them.

    • Just because you can't get it to work doesn't mean it's a waste.

True, people are not on Facebook searching for things to buy. Neither are people who buy People magazine but it's crammed full of ads relevant to its reader base, isn't it?

Relevant ads, targetted correctly can make serious money on Facebook.

  • Are you people serious? Marketers have made millions on FB.

  • Facebook ads aren't good for sales. If you're expecting to make money and get conversions through Facebook, then you're just wasting your time. People don't want to buy stuff on facebook, and most of the people don't even know that they are advertisements. They have the "like" button on there, so they click on it to see if it's worth "liking" basically. Facebook is good for branding a website. That's what I use it for.
  • By definition, Facebook clicks ARE window shoppers. They are not actively searching for you so you have to attract them. They'll basically see your ad and think "I might want life insurance. I'll check it out". Hardly anyone will say "Amazing. I was just thinking of life insurance".

I have little experience with FB. However, all PPC services work basically the same way. In order for them to make money, people have to click the ads. Therefore, they want the best ads to show more often. Best = those with the higher CTR. In other words, you have to make your ads attractive, give them a reason to click. Remember, they are not looking for you as well, you are just doing interrupt advertising. Doesn't mean it doesn't work just that your approach has to be different.
  • People have low trust in banner and text ads anyway for the most part. That's one reason why click through rates on the top SE results are so high. People find them themselves and feel in control not like someone is deliberately pushing something on them. {Even if the real story is that they are anyway--how many people really DID pay their way to those top spots?}
