SEO - Is This Normal?

Hi all,

This is my first time using SEO to rank high on Google. Since i am kinda newbie at this there is something that i would like to know.

My website is 5 weeks old. Since then i got about 430 backlinks. Most of them are from High PR forum profile links, and from article directories. Got also a few Homepages PR4.

I used Seo SplyGlass to inspect my top competitor for a certain keyword. It showed me arround 800 backlinks, where only about 30 of them had PR1+. Most of them were either PR1, PR0 or unranked.

That said, my website is not ranking in the Top100 sites on Google yet. Is this normal? I mean, when comparing my backlinks with my number 1 competitor, i am not that far from him, and still not in the top100.

Thanks everyone,
Fabio

  • There are too many unknowns in this equation. For example, you need to filter out all the nofollow links (they are just noise). Chances are your competitor's rankings are janging on maybe 2-3 good links, or in some cases just 1. Not all links are made equal. SEOs are distinguished by the power of the links they can provide. And yes, new sites behave a bit differently from established sites, and yours is in just that age group. You may see some movement up and down the SERPs before you stabilize.

By the way, I don't use SEO spyglass so I can't vouch for its accuracy. The most complete/accurate info on links that you can get would come for Yahoo Site Explorer with some good SEO plugin like SEOquake.

But in a word, get yourself some power links!

    • There it is!

Many are under the false assumption that if they do "everything" on some list, google
just has to put them #1.

Because you assume there some magical number of backlinks that should take you to #1.
You are forgetting, like PhilipSEO said, that it's not that simple. You have no idea what
kind of solid, hard work the current #1 has done over time and created a love affair
      with google.

  • Also, you have not mentioned anything about content. How does your content compare to theirs. Backlinks are vital, but content is equally important and without it you can only dream of high rankings.

If you're content is good and you're adding to it when you can... and if your onpage factors are good then you're on your way towards the top. It just takes patience and consistancy. The number 1 spot wasn't built in a day.

    • No offense, this is incorrect. The importance of content for rankings is very minor compared to backlinks. On the Web, you are what your backlinks say you are. For SEO, content is important mostly in so far as it can bring more as is can bring more links: even having your keywords on the page is not essential.

Again, this is incorrect. Everything "on-page" is only a minor ranking factor compared to backlinks. Backlinks are the only indefinitely scalable aspect of SEO. Any flaw in on-page SEO can be compensated by easily by just getting more links.
  • Another thing you should consider are your keywords. Are you targeting them by providing backlinks with the right anchor text? Does everything appear natural by mixing it up with other anchor texts?

Another thing you should note is the domain age of the competitor and the quality of the links that he is getting. Also, have you taken a look at your other competitors aside from the one ranking in #1? Sometimes, authority sites can get away with just a few links.

  • It may take a while to rank well for a new site. Be patient and keep gradually building quality relevant backlinks.

    • Please save your banalities and don't contribute if you have nothing to add. This is not DigitalPoint.
    • I think is pretty good advice. Also, make sure your on-page is up to snuff and that your keywords are in your URL somewhere.

SEs don't always index links from article directories, forums, etc so you may not have as many backlinks as you think (as far as the SEs are concerned).

As for content, it's important to have some body that is relevent to the keyword you are targeting, but quality content is most important because this is what people will organically link to and this is what you want. Also check the anchor text of your backlinks, it is best to have (some of) your keywords in the anchor text of links pointing back to your site.

  • Thakns so much everyone for replying. I guess some of thing were not clear on my first post: i am targeting 3 keywords and i always use anchor text. I also mix them so it looks more natural. For my main keyword i have about 430 backlinks as i said before. About 95% of this links are DoFollow.

The site has no articles or things like that because is mostly a e-commerce kinda site. The no1 site is also similar to mine.

I know that is hard to get one 1st page on Google and even harder on no.1. But since most of my on page factores are not bad(keyword on link, H1 tag with keyword, meta tags), and i have a considerable amount of backlinks when compared to the number1 for the keyword, i was suprised that i was not on the top100. I am not asking to be on page 1, nothing like that, is just from the comparations i think the site should be ranked a little better(in fact i don“t even know which rank i am from the keyword, because the software i use only checks the top 100 sites for a keyword). Also rank checker from SEO Book does not give me a rank, only a dash.

I am know wondering if Google kinda forgot my website.

    Again, Thanks everyone

  • I agree too many unknowns. What you can do is what is called competative analysis. Look at the top sites. Look at their code. Specifically the meta and title. What factors are google using now to determine the SERP's? No one knows the exact algorithm lets face it. So the only thing you can do is look for consistancy amongst the top 10 current sites. This will give you apeak into what Google is looking for. Use averages and denity totals to find clues. I wrote an article about this here: (thegorillaadagency.com/blog/keyword-density-how-to/). Hope that helps bro!
  • I second that, Thomarv. I'm still "at war" with a competitor of mine that has one amazingly good backlink {Front page of wetpaint} and rides on that mostly. Sad part is that they don't even get most of their visitors from search engines at all, but straight from wetpaint! Lol. But that one really good link got them a rank of 6.

    • Just goes to show you the importance of great links lol
  • Yup there is no substitute for them.

And keyword anchor text too. That matters more than anything you actually do on your own site. If you don't believe me, google the words "click here" then see what comes up first. Then go look on that page for the words "click here." You won't find it at all, it's not there.
  • Backlinks need to be relevant and higher in PR before they will get you ranked. Good Luck man.
  • Yes, It's Normal You do not get rank till becouse your site is preety new it's take time to get rank on Google and some time Google take time to count your back link
