    You need:

    1. More content

    2. Better site structure

    3. More backlinks

    4. Better backlinks <- backlinks from strong sites, good neighbourhoods etc...

    5. Targeted keywords on your backlinks.

And look at PR a little, but really not that much.

    That should do it

I have simplified it to fit it into a quick post, but this is pretty much the blueprint that I will aim for when looking at beating out some competition.

    Look out for these:

    1. Number of backlinks.
    2. Webpages from authority websites, i.e. About.com, eHow.com, Wikipedia, etc.
    3. Relevancy of the top ranking sites.

search for "traffic travis".. they have a free version which is pretty decent. Or else you can use yahoo site explorer and do it all manually..

Keep this in mind: you won't really know if you can outrank anyone until you get out there and start gaining real experience.

If you wanna beat your competitors, you better be doing more or the same things they are doing. People think they can get on the same pages with competitors that are buying backlinks by the thousands of dollars. Just be sure its something you can compete with. If not look for some other keywords or a different business.

          Thanks,
          Robert

I believe in creating high quality content and create new constant regularly. Add some high quality backlinks in there, as well as keeping your content filled with keywords and you should be ranking high in no time :-)

Yeah you need what is called competative analysis. What I would do is this. Backlinks are important yes. So go to yahoo and type in the search bar: 'link:yourcompetitor.com'. This will give you the inbound link total for the site (in yahoo). You can also check this stat in Google. Use this search term: 'links:yourcompetitor.com' \\ Link to the high PR ranking sites they are linked to. You can check PR by googling 'PR checker'.

With that being said you will also need to compare density's of several factors. You want to look at the title of your web page as well as the title of the competiton. Also look at the density of the meta-descriptions as well. To learn more about density's I have just written an article in my blog all about it. (thegorillaadagency.com/blog/keyword-density-how-to/).

Hope all this is what you were loking for.

+1 for TT, but don't rely on the results you get. Double check the top 10 manually. Algorithm vs human, the human wins every time for things like this. The top bracket is your competition. Ignore the total number of competing sites in google.

I disagree with looking at their number of backlinks. You can beat your competitor with very little QUALITY backlinks. There are many time where a competitor of mine may have 3,000 backlinks and I am a few positions ahead of him with only 300 backlinks. Remember its Quality not quantity.

See it as a running race...the keywords you choose the determines the distance and type of runners you are up against.

The longer your competitor has been in the race (domain age) the faster you may have to run (building backlinks) to catch up.

Quality links is like drinking quality water... if your competitor is drinking good stuff you better too.

The art is not to run a race unless you have good chance of being in the top 10. That can be easily done, if you know how to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of your opponents.

Good luck and if win or lose, learn to enjoy the race!

Focus first in making a good quality content before you do the rest. Remember that good content will give you a big chance to beat your competitors. When it comes in backlinking campaign, focus also in getting a good quality backlinks. Always remember that quality is better than quantity.
