Keyword SEO and Blogs?

Hello all just a question. I am been doing quite a bit of SEO keyword research to find low competition high traffic niche keywords.

The program I am using suggests setting up a niche site optimized for that keyword eg. keyword in title tag, description, within text, + backlink anchortext.

It just got me to thinking, instead of setting up a new site for each keyword niche couldn't you just use one blog eg. "everything blog" and just have a particular post optomized properly for that keyword so that the url and title of the post will contain the keyword, and then work at developing backlinks with anchortext to that page.

I suppose the downside is you are putting all your eggs into one basket, but are there any other significant disadvantages, eg. does google look at the overall theme of the site to see how well it corresponds to the page?

Any advice would be great, thanks.

The way around this is to use Worpress with a generic domain such as "alltypesofproducts.com" and then set up sub domains in your particular niche such as "dogtrainingguide.com" or "stopsmokingpatches.com". This means that depending on your hosting package, you could have a lot of niches with just one purchased domain.

Thanks. It just seems like there are a ton of advantages setting it up this way (eg. less $$ on domains, less time SEO on tons of domains, overall increase in backlinks with one main site).

I guess I am wondering what the downsides are. There must be some cons otherwise everyone would just use a "one size fits all" blog/site.

For example say I want to optimize for the keyphrase "red widget", and feel I can get top 5 ranking based on current competition for that keyphrase. Would the url www(dot)red-widget(dot)info give me higher google quality then say www(dot)myeverthingblog/red-widget(dot)info if each had same number of backlinks, on page optimization etc?

      Thanks

        I wouldn't think so.

It's my understanding that you can optimize each page of the Worpress blog for a different keyword. when creating backlinks you need to use anchor text with the keyword for the page you are linking to.

The main page of the blog would be optimized for the keyword that exists in your domain. the additional pages just need to be named with their primary keyword such that the url to that page contains the keyword.

for example, DogTrainingTips.com for the home page, where "dog training tips" is the primary keyword for that page. A second page on the blog could be DogTrainingTips.com/obedience_tips.html that is optimized for "obedience tips".

that's how I am structuring my new blog. It's too early to tell, as far as ranking.

If the different keywords you want to target are in totally different niche's, such as Dog Training tips and Weight Loss tips, then I would make separate websites for each project.

As far as promotion, though, you wouldn't want to leave the link:
Adams Dog Training and Dog Behavior without hiding it withiin an anchor tag.

        Anyone else??

The disadvantage of using subdomains is promotion / SEO.

Each subdomain is viewed as a separate entity by Google. So you need separate marketing/seo campaigns for each subdomain. Whereas using separate sub-directories (or categories if you use Wordpress) off the main domain require less promotion.

Thanks, sorry for my ignorance but how do you differentiate between a subdomain and subcategory?

I usually just create a new folder within the public_html file, so it would end up being www(dot)mydomain(dot)info/red-widget.html.

I am assuming this is a sub category?

      Thanks

The name of the domain is greatly taken into account for SEO purposes. So usually people will want to create a separate keyword-rich domain for each project they do.

I have a hostgator account and a domain name already registered. It's a generic name and I have done nothing with the site yet. I understand that keywordphrase.com is the best seo practice, but I'm a recently laid off factory worker from MI and have $0 to invest in more domain names.
Using the subdomain format: keywordphrase.mysite.com would work best for me from a financial standpoint. What worries me are the SEO ramifications.
Is google going to index my sites?
If I go the free hosted wordpress or blogspot route, how is that different from using my own domain when I'll still end up with a subdomain of wordpress or blogspot(ex. mykeywordphrase.wordpress.com)
The biggest difference to me would be loss of total control and traffic leaks in using free hosted sites.

Hey mismitty, I am not sure how to answer your question, but I was going to suggest that godaddy has .info domains for like $1.50. If you can at all afford it that may be your best bet.

I wouldn't suggest registering a .info if you are concerned with SEO. I have heard that studies have shown that .info's get less Google love due to the abundance of them used for spammy burner/redirect domains.

Who knows though... could be a giant myth...

Ya I've heard that before too, not sure if I put too much stock in it. I've had .info domains reach a PR 4 within about 8 months or so. Mind you that was in 2005/2006 so maybe things have changed.

For the $11 price difference btw .info and .com domains I'll take the chance.

I think what I'll do is start with the free sites then when I make some money I'll reinvest in my business by registering domain names

Actually, if you use Blogspot or Wordpress will give you a boost in ranking, because your blog host on authority site...

Having said that, there are minimum differences if you target for more competitive keywords!

Just do extensive keyword research, mine all long tail keywords to find more modifiers, combine the modifiers with your keywords to generate a lot of long tail keywords.

We don't know which keywords actually rank well and bring more traffic, although the keyword tool will give you some indication. Bottom line, you need to create as many pages as you can to host those keywords.

One way you can do your research is through create those pages on Web 2.0 sites - Squidoo, Hubpages, Wordpress.com and Blogspot.com, and only create landing pages (To sell your affiliate or own product) on your website.

Track your website and see what keywords is bringing in more traffic and converting well, harvest those keywords and generate / brainstorm for more related long tail keywords, but this time you host all those pages on your website and start creating back links to it...

Does the authority value of hosting for free on the Wordpress server actually outweigh the benefit of having your own domain?

I would think having your own keyword targeted domain (blog), hosted on your own server would be much better SEO wise.

But I could be wrong as I am just getting back into SEO again after a couple years off.

I have a site that ranks for a couple totally different keywords (i.e., in different markets/genres). You have to build links to each subdomain (or folder), but it seems to work. I did this because I didn't want to buy another domain and start all over, so I just made it a sub-component of my site and started with that.
