Hi,

I have an on-line jewellery website and spend a significant amount of time trying to get new links to our site via variety. Part of our strategy is to find out what sites are linking to our competitors and then to link to these sites. However depending on which back link tool I use whether it be Alexa, Yahoo or just typing the competitors name into Google - I get a different list of sites.

How do i know which list of sites is the most reliable and also which list is given me the sites of the best value in link terms.

Any light shed on this would be fantastic!!

You better use Google itself for link checking and sites popularity and all. Because most of the business is there.

To build links you may try press release distribution, article backlinks, approaching business discussion boards etc. There are lots of ways to build backlinks.

This is a recent article from Google's Webmasters blog about building quality links. I strongly recommend that you read it and also watch Matt Cutts, Google's engineer, short videos about SEO on their Youtube Channel. Just type "links" or "SEO" or whatever you want to find out more about in the search box.

      Hope this was helpful.

I agree with using Google to check the backlinks of a site...it's the most up-to-date method....yahoo is timed delayed.

If you want a good way to promote the site....try:

Blog commenting on high pr sites
        Forum profile backlinks
        Article marketing
        Video marketing
        Mini net sites

There was a thread on here somewhere today where I guy make it to #1 spot in Google and after I checked his/her site I found majority of the backlinks were high pr blog comments and a few mini net sites.

As far as matching your competition you can do that but if all of their backlinks are weak then you could be doing a lot of wasted efforts...I would analyze their backlinks and just get a higher PR backlink portfolio than they hold and they will be scratching their heads trying to figure out how you over took them in the rankings.

I strongly encourage steering clear of any automated software...more and more folks are getting de-indexed for using those recently.

As far as what Matt the Google guru tells you....I believe only half of what comes out of his mouth. He works for Google so he obviously isn't going to tell you how to use the loop holes to get around the algo. He wants everyone to play fair and work their butt off to get to the top. I agree with about half of that.

I only trust the results of my own experiences with my sites by studying the analytics and trends over a time period as well as seeing what other people are doing in the forums...i have a few tester sites that I apply my "toss it against the wall" methods to and see what pans out.
