How can I tell if a forum is worth posting on?

My niche does not have many forums to post on. But I visit several forums regularly that have nothing to do with my niche, just things that interest me. Dogs, golf, music, etc. I post on these forums anyway, but how can I tell which ones I should focus on (for getting links for SEO)? How can I tell if the link I put in a sig or on a profile is a good link. Meaning, it's not a no-follow link, right?

Also, on a forum, if you have a sig that includes a link to one of your sites, each time you post, is that another link?

To have a backlink is better than not to have anything.

There are do follow signature & profile links and there are no follow. Please check using SEO for Firefox plugins (automatically highlighted if it's nofollow)

I see some rankings improved everytime I got a new signature link

forum backlinking is almost dead. However - it doesn't hurt...I just wouldn't spend a lot of time on it.

    • I agree with the previous poster. Posting on forums strictly for backlinking is almost always pointless, however if you're making high quality contributions to the forum you may get some regular visitors, so it can't hurt.

Don't bother with posting on forums just for backlinks. Go there to learn about the people in your niche, gain some respect within your niche and possibly get some traffic to your site.

Go to forums that are active and have traffic. You can always take a look at the Alexa ranking but I don't know how reliable that really is though.

Do not rely on forums for backlinks. Only invest your time on forums that you enjoy to participate in.

Even if the forum is unrelated to your business all kinds of people read forum posts.

Forums are a great place to network and make friends.

Tell ya what, this SEO stuff is maddening. You guys are saying it's a waste of time to get backlinks from forums? I feel like I live in the Twilight Zone. For months, all I read is backlinks, backlinks, backlinks. Get them on forums, blogs, anything and everything, niche-related is better but even if it's unrelated to your niche, do it... all links help SEO. You guys say not?

I agree with most answers here. Backlinks on forum doesn't work but it doesn't hurt doing it to get yourself out there. It's a great place to network and build up the community.. In my opinion, forums are worth posting on if you get a lot of reply and feedback to your question, concern, and answer. Warrior is def a top notch! Good luck.

If you want some seriously powerful backlinks for your keyword, which I assume is "sell mineral rights" you need to write a solid and informative article about it or something related with a link to your site and submit it to respected blogs in this niche. They might approve it. If not, submit it to article directories. Just try it...one good solid informative article.

    Consider the following factors:
    1) Pagerank
    2) Number of active members
    3) Number of links available in Signature
    4) Attribute of signature link (whether it is dofollow or not)

I am a member of different do follow forums and it helps me a lot if I have some new blogs and I just included them in my sig links. You can tell if a forum is worth posting on if they are active and is related to your niche ..

I've seen a little bit of a result from it actually. They are not high quality backlinks but they are still links and anyway it can't hurt for the human traffic it will get you if you become popular on the forums.

I'm not much into creating websites and get them ranking in serps but forum backlinks can't be dead!

Considering the amount of forums out there, if major search engines like google were to discredit backlinks from forums altogether, there could be a lot of instabilities in how websites rank.

But then, being "dead" could be interpreted in more than one way.

Obviously, you will get links from forum posting. How effective these links are is a completely different question. Links from forum posting are virtually worthless.

What happens if you start a thread on your nieche with 1000+ words of relevant keyword related content and a dofollow backlink to the site. If the page gets indexed by google, is it still not relevant? (From an SEO perspective)

Google knows how easy posting on forums is and that they are not links that the owner of the forum puts because he/she likes your site.Forums are not made for SEO work. These are used for discussion, to find best solution of any problem, to know views of peoples on a topic and more. We give links in signature to get right solution of discussion that happen in forum site.

Forums can be very helpful. I get a large chunk of my traffic from various forums every day - and not just traffic, many of my big loyal clients have come from the forums. And, yes, each post with your signature is another backlink.

If you can find some good forums on your niche, go in there and become a good member of the community. Not only will you create backlinks, but you can also use it to cultivate new business. If you're posting informative stuff and providing value to the forum, people will visit your site.

But, while forums can be great, don't forget about other forms of marketing, like article marketing. Your articles are providing quality backlinks, too!

I would disagree with the people who say that forums are not worth posting to. In my opinion every backlink counts no matter where it comes from but you shouldn't rely on just forums for backlinks. you should use a combination of all posible sources such as article directories, blog comments, etc.

    Well,
The main factors for your SEO value are:
    > Signature link type dofollow/nofollow
    > Forum pagerank.
    > Relevancy of forum with your niche.

But never ever post in forums just for getting backlinks.
In forums you can do more than this and benefit more you can trade in forums , you can make friends and also learn and share new things.

Only join active forums. You can see that in the daily and weekly stats if how many visits it daily. Forum links are still links. Its better than nothing.

I would take into consideration the amount of members on the forum. Some forums will also tell you how many members and guests are currently viewing too.
