Call tracking for web promos?

The company we use for call tracking is pushing the idea of running a string of unique toll free 800 style numbers for tracking each section of our on-line promotions.

The thinking is that we're offering our services to a global audience so we should use toll free number regardless. By going with several 800 numbers we'd see what sections of the site are prompting the customers to dial in.

I know that with our other campaigns this has been really great info but once you go online you're looking at tons of info from Google Analytics and WebStats already. So how do SEOs merge it all together and make sense of it all, or is this one of those too much info in the wrong market problems?

Personally, when I have any really crucial questions or I want to buy something in a panic, that's when I pickup the phone and call. Plus everyone seems to have a cell phone these days so I am voting we try it.

If you're taking phone calls, you should be tracking them. It's a source just like AdWords, Business.com, a paid directory, etc.,.

I've had customers see practically zero online results from market-leading paid directory (a very expensive one, at that), yet it was killing on the phones. Had we not had call tracking in place, we wouldn't have had a real picture of what that campaign was doing for them, and they would've probably wanted to cancel it.

You can always set data aside if you don't need it. You can't go back in time and get it when you never had it.
