Can some of you give me some criteria to look for, amongst the top ranking websites, when deciding whether or not I should try to rank for a specific k.w.? Competing pages? Pr rank? Link count? Thank you.

    Forget using any tools.

    allintitle:"keyword phrase" (estimate of competition)
allinanchor:"keyword phrase" (another estimate of competition)
PR of top 10 ranking pages
PR of the domain of the top 10 ranking pages

Then, go to yahoo and type in linkdomain:competitorssite.com (replace competitor's site with a URL on the first page of the results, do this for each and every page on the top 10 results on Google. If you find a site that has less than, let's say, 1000-2000 inbound links, with a domain PR no greater than 3, then ranking on the first page should be easy.

Put everything into a spreadsheet, and analyze. Compare the competition to the CPC of the keyword in Adwords to work out the profitability of the niche to see if it's even worth your while. If it is, then...

    Bingo.

Of course if you want to become totally confused by listening to nonsense theories of how there's no such thing as a "set number" then I'm sure those replies will come later.

      Hi Steve

I am brand new to Affiliate marketing and learning the postings here; Thanks for your help. Could you please elaborate on what do you mean by "allintitle:"keyword phrase"" etc below. Also what is "a domain PR no greater than 3" means. How do you check the " PR of top 10 ranking pages" ? Sorry if you feel this is dumb question, as i said i am a newbee and would appreciate if you explain it more

      Thanks

-The first page competition is the one you should mainly be focusing on. Check on page 2 occasionally to see the up coming competition as well

-If the top 10 has 3 PR 0's then it's super easy to rank for the keyword.

-If there is a lot of home pages in the top 10 then the competition is optimizing for the given keyword

    - If the top 10 has a lot of PR 4+ sites it usually means you will have a hard time beating them

    - If the top 10 is full of PR N/A-3 and they are internal pages then it's not too bad.

Some quick and easy to understand tips but use them as a loose guideline and always try to use your best judgment. It's something your going to just need to develop over time and it's mostly done by trying things out.

    Hope it helps!

Check the page backlinks only(of the top ten results),if you see there are many sites linking back to it ,then forget competiting for that keyword.Next you should check out the pr of each page,if you find that most of them have a pr of 3 or above, then it will take a lot of work and time.

Josh Green, how many sites linking back do you consider to be too many?

So is doing a search with quotes, to see how many competing pages there are, not a good determiner of competition? I've read to do this in a couple of manuals. Thanks.

Also depends where those pr 3+ sites are getting their main backlinks. If they are from relevant sites in turn, then it will be a lot harder than if they are unrelated but authority links.

I had this happen with one of my main competitors which is a 6 but was not too hard to displace from 1 keyword because their main juice link is from wetpaint home page, which is very powerful but not related to my keyword or the site's genre.

    Steven,

Thanks for your post it looks interesting. I've been researching this subject closely because I am weak in this area and I need to get it right.

I own Micro Niche Finder. I would be very interested to know why this (or other) tools are not recommended.

Your thoughts would be appreciated greatly.

    Kind regards,

    John.

Some tools use their own harvested databases of URLs and content to give queries that you can't find elsewhere. These tools are useful. The vast majority however simply acquire their data from both Google and Yahoo. Therefore, using Yahoo & Google directly can give you the exact same results, without having to pay any money.

It's all part of what I like to call the "Internet Marketing Paradox". Marketers marketing nonsense to marketers who market nonsense. It's quite the paradox, isn't it? And yes, I market a lot of nonsense, just not in the IM niche.
