I'm running pay-per-click ads on Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, and MySpace. It's a local campaign so I have set so the ads appear in a specific corner of the country.
However, Google Analytics clearly tells me that people are seeing my ads and clicking into my landing page from outside this target area. Not in huge numbers, but enough to raise my clients' eyebrows -- 'cause they're paying for those clicks!!
I've ruled out the following explanations:
- It's not just one of the advertising channels: Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, and MySpace are all sending traffic from outside the areas I've targeted in the campaign.
- It's not an error in the campaign settings. They're all properly set to display ads in the target area only.
- It's not miscoded links in the ads themselves.
