Over long term, do big sites rank better and longer or do small sites do?

Anyone had any experience of ranking larger sites (100 pages plus) compared to smaller sites (5-20 pages)? Which one do you find holds more long-term success in terms of holding its rank in the search engines.

The reason why I ask is that for many markets and niches that I come across, the top 1-5 positions are held by larger sites (even for many long-tail keywords - 2 to 5 words). Hardly do you see a 10 or 15 page website up there (may be for keyword terms with very low monthly search count).

I am talking from personal experience.

I run a number of small sites that almost all rank on page one of google, so dont think a small site cant rank.

It depends on how you wanna make money, larger sites are good for the ad networks that pay per impressions.

Smaller sites are good for CPA offers and affiliate products.

Only use larger sites if you have an undying love for a topic because they can be time consuming to put up and run.

    hope this helps

      Thank you for your comments.

I am doing affiliate products but am aiming for 100+ page websites, and I was wondering if this approach may be best for the long time. Like you say, it does take time/effort etc in creating the content. I was thinking whether to change my stratergy and build smaller sites (say up to 30 pages) and then focus much more on the backlinks (which also takes considerable time).

Depending on what term you want to rank for, if you are creating a small site, it shouldn't take too long to build the site. It will take a bit longer for it to rank though.

It all depends on what you want to do. Some people like to focus on their passion, and others like to build small sites for the money that can come from them (not that big sites can't, but you have to put in more work initially.)

There is no greater motivating factor than an undying love. So if you have that, go for a nice big site!
