Blogs and custom domains

If I build a blog on say Tumblr even though it will be a new page it will be a new page on a credible website, right?
If I then decide to add a custom domain to that blog does it take away from the fact I am using tumblr and is it just as if I have started a brand new website?
I am asking this for linkbuilding reasons, maybe tumblr isnt the best example as it is an add on domain (mynewblog.tumblr.com/ instead of a sub directory like .com/my-new-blog/.
Whats the apple?
