How do you avoid bad links from comments on your blog?

How do you do this?
Do you constantly monitor, and what happens if the google spider gets there before you have a chance to delete the link?
A solution could be to approve all comments before they are published, but that would kind of spoil the flow in conversations.
Is it possible to setup wordpress so that it's not possible to include any links whatsoever in comments?

Thanks.

Best regards,
Thomas

Most people approve comments before they are published. It doesn't spoil the flow of conversation. If you don't do it then eventually every spammer in the world will know you have auto-approve comments and you will get hammered with spam every day.

I wouldn't recommend turning off the links (if you can) because then you would get a lot less legitimate comments. Even the true commentators want a link from it.

Due to the amount of spammers out there, I do not allow comments on my blog.

Since I do not allow comments, I dont have to worry about spam links.

I wouldn't go to the extreme of disallowing all comments because it takes away from the allure of a blog which IMO should not just be a place to post content you want read, but also engage your readers and get them involved in the conversation.

I think your safe with comment moderation because it keeps out the riff raff and if they are your normal visitors/readers they will come back to the site and keep up with the conversation at a later time/visit.

My blog compliments my forum. In just about all of my blog post there are links to similar threads in the forum - sometimes I will copy my blog post and post it in the forum.

If someone wants to comment on one of my blog post - they can sign up on the forum and post their comments there.

The forum security takes care of any potential spammers - ReCaptcha, email verification, and all new members are checked against the Stop Forum Spam database.

Time is already in short supply - I do not have time to deal with spam on my blog, and my forum. Something had to give, so comments were disabled on my blog. And I do not see the use in having comments in 2 different locations.

In your case than that is probably a smart thing to do, but for someone who is just running a blog or has a blog that compliments another site I think it is important to keep the conversation on the blog.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

It's on a business website, and I have a lot on my plate right now, so having to approve all comments will most likely take to much time.

Thanks and have a terrific weekend.

    Best regards,
    Thomas

You can try using Akismet Plugin and captcha on your blog. This way you can avoid lots of Spam comments. Akismet is excellent in catching spam comments. You can delete bunch of Spam comments in just one click.

I don't know what you do about this but I get really annoyed with people trying to link spam me on my hubpages (particularly in the finance niche).

Blogger was worse - I couldn't bulk remove the spam so I just had to turn off comments.

    Different sites have different solutions.

In some cases, I turn off comments completely because I know that 95% of them will be automated spam comments.

On other WordPress blogs, I've modified the comment form where you can't leave a link and I don't moderate comments beyond using Akismet and content filtering.

On some blogs, I leave comments open and use plugins such as CommentLuv to encourage comments. I moderate these closely and only let legit comments through. I do, however, use the spam comments to do niche research and to see what tricks spammers are up to.

Use a captcha bot to eliminate automated software from spamming your comments or use a registration form.

Yeah. Comment moderation. Removing the auto approve thingy for your blog. Once and for all. It is your duty to moderate incoming and outgoing links. Comments is one of them!

I have found that WP Spam Free works well for Wordpress. Additionally, it allows you to disallow comments from people using proxy servers.
