If you want quality I would suggest that you avoid paying per link, unless you are specifying the link locations and supplying or preview/approving the link content. When you pay on a per link basis the link builder has an incentive to get the easiest, and typically lowest quality links as possible.

The big problem with most of the low quality link methods is thet they usually don't last very long so you must pay again each month to replace all of those which have been devalued. So it is almost like you are renting them for a short period of time. Of course that is good for the link building companies and provides even more of an incentive for them to supply you with just such links.

If you find a link builder that specializes in meritorious links you will often get more value from your investment.

Dont get hoaxed into the people that say I will get your site ranked in 2 weeks. Proper SEO link building takes time, however the investment is worth it because you will stay on the first page for a long time.

I've outsourced my backlinking to ppl from other countries. I wanted them to do it daily - the results were mixed. Just depends on the person and if they really want to do a good job or not.

Thanks. I do prefer the model of having a VA work on link building, and you're all correct, I only want quality, not crap link farm links. That said,

1 - What should a reasonably good VA cost for link building - hourly

2 - What are reasonable expectations? (ie., if they work 40 hours a week, what would you look for them to accomplish)

3 - How would you allocate their time (directories, article posts, forum posts, blog posts, Angela's type links, etc.)

tough questions when your mixing quality. I have a good build team that i can normally get about 120 good links out of for about 300 bucks. Ive done the both pay per time and pay per link.

I would recommend finding someone who understands your intentions completely otherwise they can end up hurting you more than helping and in the end will not be liable for any of the damage.

Anyone who will cut corners and automate any part of the process might get your site removed. Just saying someone at the other end of the globe may not always care if you lose your domain.

Make sure they are getting out there and grabbing quality links from other local businesses, competitors, forums and blog comments at minimum. Some companies will sell you one specific form of back links like social bookmarking or directory submissions and this won't be effective, nor will it help your overall goals nearly as much as gaining quality links will. Unless you want to coordinate outsourcing each specific part of your link building campaign you will have to find a "one sized fits all" solution who understands good SEO vs. making a quick buck.
