Domain Age...Does it Matter?

Hey All,

Quick question, when you are analyzing the top 10 results for a keyword, how much do you look at the domain age? Do you take it seriously or disregard it all together?

Peace,
Noah

I've been told by some serious SEO experts that it does matter, not that you can't rank with a new domain but it is an important factor.

There is some relevance but it is not the make or break. Just think, if domain age was the key issue what point would there be in anyone building a new website, if there was already at least one in that niche.

I consider domain age when I'm buying domains, but don't even look at it when I'm analyzing competition.

I think it has value, for sure, but I don't think it has so much value that it is worth my time to analyze and record...especially when there isn't much I can do about it.

I don't believe domain age plays any role in the Google algorithm, and if it does it's only a small one. What I've found to be more important is the age of the backlinks you have built.

Obviously a brand new domain won't have any matured backlinks while an older domain will hopefully have at least a dozen or so.

      - domain plays a big factor in terms of the site's credibility. a domain name has been around for over 20 years has more credibility then a domain that you just bought.

      - google takes this into account when it calculates your ranking.

Certainly domain name matters but there are many other factors involve. Don't bother yourself too much about this, you can still outrank an old by building quality links. On the other side, you might want to consider buying an old domain that the name is related to your niche.

People confuse domain age with document age.

Google looks at the age of a document (web pages) and with all things being equal, usually gives greater authority to older documents.

It is possible to outrank domains such as Amazon with a brand new site so it's not always a factor. However, if the keywords you're targetting have a lot of older domains with tons of backlinks then you're going to struggle. Usually, a domain that's been around for a while will have a lot of backlinks.

Ranking in the search engines requires a combination of things and domain age does play a role.... just not a HUGE one.

Most people dont care about domain age but the search engines put a huge value on it, It lowers the chance of a website being spam in their eyes

If you read my post you'd understand I'm talking about document age and not domain age. There is a difference, Cutts doesn't mention document age
