Calling SEO Experts! Have I got this right?

Hi everyone

I'm a bit of a newbie so sorry if this sounds obvious to you.

I've been doing a serious amount of leaning the last couple of months & I've decided on a few methods of making money online that I would like to work on.

Obviously not all at once!

I'm going to start with affiliate marketing.

The plan is to set up some blogs optimised around some target keywords but I have a problem that's bothering me & I can't seem to find much information about it.

Apparently the location where your website is hosted can have an effect on your ranking but this is something you don't here much about.

Also from most of the keyword research examples I've seen your told to look for the "global monthly searches" & target keywords with 1,500+ searches.

But the problem is, I'm based in the U.K. & the search results for page one of Google differ from country to country.

So I think I should be looking more at the "local monthly searches". Would I be correct in saying this means the search quantity for whichever country you live in?

From all the keyword & SEO tutorial videos I've seen your told to do keyword research, check monthly searches, check competition & almost always recommended Hostager for web hosting but this is not ideal for someone in the U.K.

I may be off with this a little, as I said, I'm a newbie & this is just something that I've been thinking about.

My main question is, as I'm in the U.K should I just concentrate on ranking for page one of Google U.K?

I think it would be really difficult for someone in the U.K to rank on page one of Google U.S.A.

It makes things a bit tricky to get your head around or maybe its just a newbie issue I'll master soon enough.

The location of your site is just one of a couple of hundred factors, ideally yes it should be hosted in the country you want to target but from our experience the country domain is more important than where the site is hosted.

If you get good ranking in Google UK first, you can be sure Google USA will follow in time.

It shouldn't be an issue mate. You may be located in the UK but you want to capture mainly the US market. Thus, have US hosting and base your keyword research off GMS and also US local searches. To see what ranks in page 1 of google, get behind a U.S proxy and search your keywords. This will show you what U.S users see.

    Hi Barry,

I'm from the UK too. I host my websites with cyberwurx.com which is a US based web host and have never had problems ranking in Google's UK results (Google.co.uk not "results from UK pages"). I haven't experienced any issues with where my websites are hosted... like I said, I use a US based host and always target UK keywords/results/rankings.

In terms of global and local searches, I always look at local searches in the UK and tend to get more accurate results. Global searches tend to be a lot higher than UK searches and if you're planning on targeting the UK only (to start with) then I'd stick with local searches to get a better idea of how much a keyword will be searched for here.

After your sites have been around for a while they'll start to rank in US results and across the rest of the world. Do you have an analytics program set up? Google analytics is great to see where all your traffic is coming from and it's also helpful for finding keywords that you may want to target, based on what people are searching for to find your site.

    Hi Barry,

I am in the UK as well and as far as I know though I am no SEO expert, the extension you choose is quite important so if you wanted to target UK traffic I would use a .co.uk or .org.uk . If you use a .com; .org; or .net you should be seen in all countries. One way of checking this is to look on google UK and google US. There may be a slight disparity in rankings. I also use hostgator and found them to be the best when starting your online career. The response time is very quick and they are very helpful. I hope this helps!!

Thanks for all the posts everyone, they have been very helpfull.

So I should still be able to rank on page of Google U.K. if my hostng is in the U.S & I use a .com domain. As long as the competition is low enough & I have my website optimized in all other areas I should be fine?

If I can rank on Google U.K. first & then build up to rank on Google U.S that would be great.

Do you think currency puts poeple off buying?

For example if I promote amazon products from my website in GBP, that would be fine for U.K based buyers but if I start to rank in Google U.S. people in the U.S mite be put off buy the products being in GBP.

Is there a way round the curreny thing? or is that just something we have to put up with?

    Hi Barry,

I too am using amazon and haven't found a way around the currency thing yet, but I'm sure there is a way. I use GBP (amazon.co.uk) and primarily target the UK so I'm not too worried about the US and USD at the moment. I wouldn't worry too much about currency until you are recieving a reasonable amount of US traffic.

I got your PM but I don't have enough posts to be able to reply....

I don't use an amazon plugin on my site, it's a static webpage that I designed with a few aStores and product links here and there. Which bit were you looking at in particular that made you think it was a plugin?

If you use google chrome as your browser (if not, it's free), install "google global" as an extension in the tool bar and you can see the results from different countries.
