Question about forum signature backlinks

I know that having your website in your signature on dofollow forums can increase your number of backlinks. What I'd like to know is does it matter if the forum you post on is relevant to your site? Let's say I have a website about working out. Will the backlinks I get from signatures in workout forums, video game forums, seo forums, and wahm forums all count equally or would only the signatures from the workout forum count and the others would hurt my pagerank?

Well, obviously more related the links come from, ie, the overall theme of the site, or a part of a forum that just talks about that niche and that's where you only post, sure, it will help.

      Agree.
The more related the better for your site.
But even if there is no relevancy , it's still a link.

The most important thing is the anchor text - the words you use to link to your site. This is number one along with quantity.

You want lots of links with the right words from any follow site with a good reputation.

If the post on the forum site is themed to your site it is all the better...

Try and rotate the words in your links occasionally because site-wide links can be discounted by G**gle.

I would say just use common sense. Google has a very complex algorithm, so while some aspects of SEO may not be as important as others... the almighty Google factors in every variable. So with that being said, it would be better if all of your links came from keyword relevant sites using keyword relevant anchor text. But alas, you can overcome some of these issues with quantity.

But like has already been said Google will discount site wide links. Forum signature links are good for short term SEO. They will give your SEO a temporary boost.

So if you stop posting on that forum for more than a month you will see your links decrease in value. Your best option is to make your posts count on those forums, with keyword rich content. Don't just go posting a bunch of worthless posts like, "Thanks", "I'm interested", "I agree", etc. just to get backlinks.

Put an article marketing spin on your posts. Fill them with relevant keywords to your niche, and your posts could possibly get ranked in Google which could drive traffic to your site, no matter which niche forum it was posted on.

As for the frequency, I would aim for about 2 or 3 decent posts per week. Continue this pattern religiously and Google will take notice. The problem with signature links is that you can't vary your anchor text. But providing a consistent flow of quality links that are new will overcome that problem.

But there is still use in putting your signature link on all forums for this site you speak of. Sometimes if you are on an "sports cars" forum you can have a signature link to something like "home loans" or "video games". This will still drive traffic to your site when you least expect it.

      Hope that helps.

        Hi Net Surfer,

As James wrote the anchor text is important, but the page content is also important. Regardless of what the overall theme of the site is, the page's content is far more relevant. So if the thread was about a specific topic that relates to your backlinked page then it counts more than if it's not related.

Does more than one link on the same forum help? I always thought more links the better, but I was recently told that one link from a website's ip is just as good as 100.

In other words, if you're using forum posting as a back link strategy, should you continue to post on the same forums to build links, or keep subscribing to new forums (without spamming of course)

Since iv been doing SEO, tracking backlinks and seeing how they effect rankings, I have noticed that multiple links from the one website IP address isnt much better than just one.

I use Yahoo to track links since they always show a more accurate number than Google. Yahoo never shows anymore than 2 backlinks from the same IP address.

This is why I think writing articles for backlinks and sending them all to same directory is a waste of time. The trick is to spread them out accross all directories.

I think the search engines have limited the number of backlinks from one IP because of how easy it used to be to buy spammy sitewide backlinks by the millions.

I guess the real answer is that no one really knows for sure.

This link to the Google Webmaster Live Chat transcripts from October make interesting reading around this subject.

I recently saw a site that had 35000 backlinks to it from irrelevant sites.

Quantity seems to make a huge difference as well.

The particular site was number 1 for a highly searched term.

I would imagine that getting links from many sites would be better than lots of links in a forum related to your niche.

Probably best is to get as many links from as many sites as you can in your niche.

      Hi Easy,

While that site had 35000 links from irrelevant sites, it may also have had a few really good links that were doing all the heavy lifting. That's why pages with relatively few links often outrank others with many thousands of low quality links.

Just imagine all the work that would have been saved if they had simply gone for the few really good links and earned the same position.

Link from the same theme site is more valuable especially when the title of the page you have your link on also has the keyword you are targeting.

Signature links on the same niche forums will help in 2 ways. 1. Your anchor text along with surrounded text will make it a stronger backlink. 2. It's a branding / advertising real estate for your intended audience and you will get referral traffic to your site from forums.

Another thing people tend to ignore is that you can put inner pages in signatures.

If you use signatures in a relevant niche, it also brings you direct traffic from forum members.

My experience has been mixed. They do seem to help get sites indexed very quickly (couple of times I linked fresh sites with forum sigs on DP and they got indexed within 12 hours), especially with the high PR, high traffic forums because those get crawled by the SE bots like mad. But whether or not they help with rankings is debatable.

getting forums links from a relevant one would surely help you......but entirely the forums ranking would be most important in this case.......the good the ranking the forums ranking is the more better is quality of the link
