Has anyone heard if Google has completely got rid of Google Local Maps from showing up in search?

Here in central Florida it is completely gone, had a couple of clients call me up all worried.

Google are working on the problem.. but they've been saying that since 2009, so who knows.

If you put the word "in" or "near" with your search phrase it might come back.. lots of niches are being effected, so for example "doctors near Florida" might work when "Florida doctors" might not.

I wish they would get rid of it all together.

I don't know, at first I was really excited about the local listings/Places. When they first rolled them out, people were crying out Armageddon and how local organic SEO was doomed.

However, I, and many other SEO's I presume, simply see it as another potential front page listing. The more exposure you have on the front page (whether organic or not), the better.

However, they are NOW incorporating the local listings WITHIN the organic listings it seems (spacing the listings out to), or at least the direction they're going. This can push a #1 organic listing BELOW the fold in many cases. And since they have so many problems with their local biz center already, and the fact that it doesn't seem to update very quickly, well I can see why local offline consultants are a little worried.

We have WAY more control over regular organic listings, and for now, I think Google wants to keep it that way. But they also see the amount of money there is in local offline consulting and will jump at the opportunity to cut out the "middle men" (local SEO's) and take the biz owners money if they can do it. (provided they keep it braindead simple and just use a "pay to play" philosophy). I don't know, I think it could get VERY ugly.
