Hey,

So I've gone down the backlink route in the past month or so. Added several high PR backlinks to my websites.

I check google, its on the first page.. I'm excited, I can't believe its actually there. But wait, wheres the traffic? What, only 5 visitors? Surely there must be a mistake.

I check the keywords again to make sure that I haven't made a mistake anywhere (like getting the wrong keyword with low mounts of searches daily). But no, it gets a steady 800 searches a day using the "Exact" filter with Google keywords

So I figure that the statistics are incorrect and simply just a rough, rough estimate, but surely can't be that much off..

And today, I am rank 1 for that keyword and still the amount of traffic I get for it is minimal. 10-15 people a day for a keyword searched 30,000 times a month.

What is going on?

When you say 30,000/month is that the Google Webmaster Tools impressions? Or some other metric?

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

      Hi,

      Thats using Googles keyword tool.

It comes up at 800k a month for Broad search and 30k for Exact search..

I recieve about 10 visitors a day from this keyword being #1 ranking for it.

      Just can't believe it.. :/

I'd try a more appealing meta description then. Make sure it looks good and has a real hook, while being relevant.

Hmm, well I'm not sure about changing meta.

I added meta tags and description to one website which was on the first page of the SERPS and it completely disappeared afterwards.

Read up after that changing them around after the site is indexed and what not can greatly drop your rankings as Google will penalize you for it.

Is it for meta tags only, or is description also one that can mess up rankings?

I change and test the description quite often with no penalty.
Of course your serps are going to change if you change the title.
This is something I tweak from time to time also with no bad results.
Just added "download computer games" a couple of weeks ago to my title and jumped to #4 in a short time without losing other main page serps.

In Google Webmaster tools you can now see how many impressions + clicks on the Google Search your site has received for various keywords.
        Example: "Blue Widgets - Impressions = 49,500 Clicks = 22,000"

You should see this from the Google Webmaster Tools dashboard with a "more" link to view more results.

Alright cool, thanks for that. I just added it.

Just wondering though - For a keyword getting roughly 800 searches a day, surely I should be recieving more then 10 hits a day right? I thought it was 40% traffic if you were on the number 1 spot.

It's definitely weird not to be getting the traffic. Exact match is the metric to look at, and if it's a 30,000 EM "Global Monthly Search" term, you should be getting a nice, profitable flood at no.1. Are you using Google Adwords keyword tool? Have a look at the "show search volume trends" and make sure the term has a history of solid traffic (and that the 30,000 figure is not just a blip.)

Another possibility - it may be that you're not actually in the no.1 spot overall. Google is believed to customize search results based on personal preferences, location and browsing history; and may be tailoring your results based on the fact that it's your site. Check your rank from a friend's computer, or call a friend in another city / country and get them to google it for you, see if you are #1 for them.

      Hey, thanks for the post.

Well I've looked at the keyword in Market Samurai, Google keyword tool, etc. It seems that the keyword does indeed get that amount.

Yeah I worried about my site being shown to me because of my personal preferences, but I've used a few keyword rank checkers and a few other programs as well as asked people from the UK and US to see what site my ranks at, and they all tell me in the top 3, but now its #1 after giving it an extra 100 or so high PR backlinks.

I'm just really confused is all. I actually made quite a few websites of mine hit the first page, but the amount of organic traffic I have received has been minimal. Now I do realize I can't just rely on one single keyword, but surely a keyword getting like I said, 800 searches or so a day, should be bringing me a steady 200-300 UV's, right?

Let us know how many impressions you have had for that keyword over perhaps one specific day within Webmaster Tools. It would be interesting to hear that number. I have one such site that ranks in third spot for its main keyword and according to the Keyword Tool for last month that term was hitting in equivalent to 500 searches a day and as I check in Webmaster Tools the number of impressions is equivalent to just 60 searches a day. Makes me not care for getting that site to number one with those numbers. What is Google playing at? The only solution to get around this is to try and rank for primary keywords that would naturally receive considerable searches each day.

Even if I was receiving 60 searches a day i'd be happy with that, haha. Well, not really, but at least somewhere up there. I receive literally nothing.

But I've put a few of my sites into that now and we shall see from there.

      Thanks for the help

Are there shopping, youtube or image results that are near yours in the serps and getting all the clicks? Here's a tip that may help you improve CTR in Google serps, worth a try:

    BlueHatSEO.com/blue-hat-technique-12-improving-ctr-in-organic-results/

I've used it and get good CTR but not tested it empirically.

Oh thank you for the link.

Nah there aren't any youtube videos, images or anything near it. Not even Adwords advertisments above. My website is the first thing there, which displays clearly what the person is looking for in both title and description.

Check your webmaster tools and look at the search queries, as Dvduval suggested, if you see the impressions for that specific keyword then there is something wrong with your page title/description that makes the users click on another site.
