There are a couple of tiers of social bookmarking. There are those where you actually interact with your friends and peers in a social way (fb, twitter, bebo etc) but they are more social sites than social bookmark - i.e. don't spam them. There are a whole host of so-called social bookmark sites where you can leave a link back to your site. Delicious etc.. I wouldn't spam those either but they take less interaction.
Actually, there is being sociable on social sites and there is bookmarking on non-sociable sites. Google will pick up on both sorts of links, so just use wisely.

Social bookmarking is using online sites to bookmark your page. Other people can see your bookmark, comment on it, rate it, and share it. If people really like your site, your site can go viral overnight.

Social bookmarking has been so effective in the past that it has actually shut down people's servers.

An example of a social bookmarking site is Digg, Jumpatags, Mixx. All are very popular and have been known to hold the first page even above the actual site is bookmarks.
