When creating content on high authority sites for SEO purposes should the content be directly relevant to your niche or should it just be kept general? Obviously I dont want the pages to become my own competition and outrank me!

As long as the content is relevant to your business then the back link will have good weight. For example; if your niche is 'Dog Food' then an article on a high authority dog site about 'Dog Health' will be just fine.

It wont be as powerful as an article about 'Dog Food' with plenty of related keywords / LSI keywords but it will still leak plenty of link love.

General articles is good like if you have your page with keyword "online marketing" you can write articles with "online money" that will also give you good back link value.

I wouldn't worry too much about your articles outranking your site. Better to write something relevant.
