Webmaster Tools shows 4k+ links but that's not possible!

As above, a site I'm involved with has approx 200 backlinks that I created, but in Webmaster Tools it says there are 4,800 links and this figure is slowly increasing without me doing any link building.
Is this normal? Is it ok?
The site is doing quite well in the rankings.
