    Press Releases can be very good for SEO, just like a wordpress, hubpage or squidoo post. I don't know much about the free ones as I'm using officialwire myself and you need to pay for it.

    I recommend BigNews.biz distributes news and press release. Usually rank extremely high in very little time. Free as well.

    A couple of people I worked with had great success using marketwire.com for their press releases, they were doing one per week in a market against microsoft and managed to rank higher then them with it as their main strategy.

    Not sure about free press releases. I have done free submissions before and they ranked but not near as well as the article submissions that I did.
