Are social bookmarking worth it for SEO?

Backlinks are useful in two ways:

1 - it serves as a vote for your site. So the more "quality" backlinks you have for your site, the more your site's Page Rank would increase.

2 - it is an alternative source of traffic. The more visible your links from other site, the more it'll attract clicks, the more added traffic for your site.


I've quoted quality if you've noticed to give emphasis on its importance. Backlinks can hurt your site if it is coming from those irrelevant sites.

You are better off making sure your site is set up in a 'silo' structure then getting relevant backlinks from blogs and other websites in your niche.

Don't target websites not in your niche. Revelance makes a difference.

So social bookmarking is not where I should put my effort?

Right now I get the majority of my incoming links from articles, which works ok, but it would be great to speed things up a bit.

Yes they are great for SEO, great for rankings, great for indexing, great for raw traffic.

However (and this is very important), you need to make sure that when you bookmark an article on your site to Digg or wherever, you MUST use a title and description that is 100% different to that on your site.

Otherwise duplicate content issues will result in either the digg bookmark outranking your site, or worst case scenario pushing it into the supplemental index.

Do not simply accept the automatically generated title because it will cost you in the end. This goes for all social bookmarking sites. I have seen it happen, even with strong sites.

I think back links are great, but from my experiance, a great website yet only PR3 ranked, can be at the top of googles search results and doing so with great keywords and solid content will get more customers than a high ranked PR6 site, that doesn't even make the first page. I have websites with Mega Tons of Back links, yet using top keywords and a perfect designed tactic's to get at the top of googles page ranking, I can receive much more traffic than a PR6 site.

I know people will disagree with me, but I have seen this over and over again. I really don't care much what my PR ranking is. I only care about making money.

My target is ranking high in google. Should I just continue with the articles or would social bookmarking be an extra touch (worth the effort?)?

While most bookmarks are no follow, there are a couple that provide you with back-linking credit. Check out Jump Tags, Clipmarks.org, Syncone.net, Segnalo.it, Mister-Wong, Faves, and My Link Vault.

Backlinks is the back bone of SEO and every SEO wanted that he will be able to build backlinks from the relevant and quality sites.

For backlinks I prefer Directory Submission Service and Forum Postings

Magnolia - Must Have! PR7 No-Follow Social Bookmark. No categories, just add tags. I just realized when editing my list that I had not put Magnolia on it, not sure how this happened, but this is one of the best Social Bookmarks for link building, even though it is a no-follow counts strong with Yahoo backlinks and when you join groups it can bring traffic to your sites, brought me traffic time and again.

Googletop - PR3 Do-Follow Social Bookmark. Various Categories. Googletop could have a few more categories for my taste, but it's a good one for link building.

Oopza - PR2 Do-Follow. Thanks to my friend Suzanne for turning me on to this one. Lots of categories, all though some of them are oddly specific. I found the submission process to be a little tedious since it did not automatically parse my Meta tag information, but worth the extra effort.

Lipstick - PR7 Do-Follow News Site. Celebrity related content only.

Dzone - PR6 Do-Follow News Site. Web developer related content only. Link is do-follow on inner page, not front page.

Plime - PR6 Do-Follow News Site. Categories remind me of Digg, so be careful what you submit, you might get banned for spamming.

Listible - PR5 Do-Follow. This one is different, no categories instead there are lists, find a relevant list and add your links OR if there is no relevant list you can create your own and add all related content to that.

Humsurfer - PR4 Do-Follow News Site. Submit anything, no category limitations. Primarily this site is an Indian community news site, (that is the country) all though I did find many US stories.

Care2 - PR6 Do-Follow News Site. Categories include, tech, green/environment, wellness, animals, off beat. Link is do-follow on inner page, not front page.

Hugg - PR6 Do-Follow News Site. Green related content only.

Shoutwire - PR4 Do-Follow News Site.

If you want to use comment for back links, try comment kahuna - a free comment software that search for no follow tag blog.

I Agree "Easy Cash" suggestion, build your site with proper SILO structure, it will boost your ranking a lot!

Social Bookmarking is one of my main strategy for SEO. Definitely increases your web presence significantly. I use SocialMarker for this..

I Have used the social bookmarking pages for my blog site and most of the traffic that I get to it at the moment is from these sites. I don't think they help too much with SEO but they do generate traffic

you should maybe ask "would it HURT SEO?" - i can not see that SBMarking is bad, assuming you spread your marketing and do not only do S BMarking.

Also..if you want DoFollow...there are lists with DoFollow blogs (one an WSO even)...as well as programs, i just purchased "G-Lock Blog Finder" which scans blogs and can filter for DoFollow.

its the only thing i know that can produce many bookmarks in a short span of time

socialbookmarking is also great for getting deep links to your internal pages. Socialmarker is my favorite - just use the DoFollow button.

YOU HAVE TO make social bookmarking part of your SEO strategy WITHOUT a doubt. In order to have success in the social bookmark sites, the #1 element will be your content you are providing.

You will also learn that submitting to social bookmark sites and then leaving it for others to vote wont do anything but allow the engines to crawl your website faster. You must be active to have success with social bookmarking in whatever community you start submitting content.

Dont just submit your content but submit other stories you think are worthy and they will like.

Having one or two stories make, say, the front page of Digg, will give you A LOT of backlinks REALLY fast.

it is an easy way to get backlinks and can get you some really good traffic and when i mean "good traffic" i mean large amounts not targeted

Social bookmarking works. Period.

But it's time consuming... Better to get someone doing it for you, otherwise you'll be burned out and you'll leave something that is proven to work (not really recommended)

Much as the same as the above post, I use social bookmarking sites as a way to get my pages included quickly. However, SB should be a small part of your overall link building strategy.
