Are edu and gov links worth it?

I've been hearing that backlinks from edu and gov sites are counted higher than other links. Is this true?

The strategy seems to be post a relevant, interesting comment with your site url and then pingback the site to notify search engines that something changed. However, when I post a comment it invariably goes into the "awaiting moderation" purgatory and never seems to come out. Not much point in pinging a thread that didn't include your comment, right?

So, any tips on the value of this exercise and maybe doing it a little more efficiently?
Thanks,
John

Yes, and hell no all at the same time...

From my experience, what I can say is that the domain extension .edu and .gov doesn't mean dick. What does make a difference though is that traditionally, .edu and .gov sites/pages were by nature more authoratative so they tended to pass more value than many other links.

That is incidental though, it is a correlation not a causation, so to speak. Basically .edu and .gov links were/are of higher value...but not becausethey are .edu's and .gov's, just because they are quality in their own right.

Evaluate .edu and .gov links the same way you would evaluate any other links...the authority of the page, the number of other outgoing links, etc. If it is a high value link, it is a high value link...if it is a low value link, it will still be a low value link regardless of the TLD.

This has just been my experience...

So in other words, Deiss' recent free report is ultimately...useless?
