Pinging and Rss agregators question

sorry the big ignorance, but what's the difference between ping websites and rss agregators?

I'm new to this, any help is appreciated...

ping sites let search engines know new content is available and rss directories aggregate content elsewhere...

I get a lot of my own content appear on other sites due to rss aggregation.. which is cool as it gets me free linkbacks
