I asked this question before and didnt get an answer, I am sure someone knows the answer and if its a stupid obvious question than please tell me.

When link building its good to use free webstes/blog providers to build links with. I take it the reason for doing this is because these are already powerful sites in thier own right?

If I add my own domain name to something like Tumblr would it then be about as powerful as starting a website from scratch?

As I said it might be a stupid question but I would still like an answer?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi marky12345,

It helps to use a thread title that give board members a clue as to what thread is about.

It's not clear to me exactly what you are asking. Folks like to use web 2.0 sites because the are free. That is a benefit in and of itself.

Some people believe in the notion of "domain authority" but differ in exactly what that means. Is it PR or is it something else related to trust? Is this trust passed due to links from pages or is it passed simply by being part of the root domain, this is where many folks tend to hold different opinions.

I believe that most of the benefit that comes from using Web 2.0 sites is in the value of being part of a community. I you create a domain or sub domain, but don't get links from the community or participate in the community, I don't think it the domain makes any difference.

If am understanding your question correctly, you are wondering if it is better to use a free content site rather than your own hosted site. It really depends on what you are trying to do with them.

If your goal is to get high quality backlinks to a self hosted site than using a wordpress.com blog to funnel traffic back to your self hosted .org blog would be better than posting that content on your blog assuming it is brand new. This way to get faster indexing and a high PR backlink to your hosted site.

If your goal is to promote your own products or even an affiliate product you want to put those on a site YOU OWN to provide flexibility and security and you would not put that type of content on the free content site.

If your goal is to test out a new backlinking or traffic strategy, then I would use the free site to test because I would not risk having my main site being sandboxed by the search engines.

If you goal is to just sell affiliate products you should put the links on your self hosted site and the articles on the free sites pointing back to your site.

If you goal is to brand your own products then you should do a two fold strategy to get backlinks to your free site as well as your self hosted site.

Sorry for the long explanation but I'm not really sure what you are trying to accomplish.

    Hi Guys

I was in the thinking that using certain sites to build blogs such as tumble/typepad was because they were already powerful sites and being part of them and then linking back to your own site is because of the power they hold.

Surely if you do not get any benefit from these sites no matter what pr they hold on their home pages it would be just as beneficial to build a blog on a brand new community site, but I dont hear anyone suggesting this?

What im saying is some of these sites instead of letting you have a blog on there with a domain such as my-site.tumblr.com you can add a domain you own so it would just be my-site.com.

So what im asking is IF you do get the benefit of some of the power from these sites because they are already high pr would adding my own domain to the site take any of that power away?

Do I need to explain anymore?

    Thanks

I understand like you are asking whether it is better add a custom domain to your tumbler/typepad blog or use the free subdomain they provide ... (is it right)

As a subdomain (eg: me.tumbler.com) ,it is a new website. You will not get any benefit from the domain name )tumbler.com). So I suggest you to add your custom domain for your free blog.

So your telling me there is no additional benefit from making a blog with someone like tumblr/typepad/livejounel, its just the same as making a brand new site?

      That cant be right surely?
