I've been reading threads from all you experts out there, but I just don't get it. lol

I've been on monopolinks and adding tons of other peoples links to my site, but one of my sites has only received one link and the others have received none. I've done link referral, but again, not that many people reviewing me. I got desperate and added one of my own links to my site when I saw it pop up (which I think is a no-no, but if I won't help myself out, who will?)

I wrote 5 articles about working at home and submitted them to ezine, but so far they've had like 4 views. Where is the motivation to continue to write when what I've written so far hasn't generated any interest. And how can people even find it if there are so many other articles ahead of mine?

Backlinks. Ok, so if I go looking for blogs related to my niche, am I asking them to place my link on their site? Or am I just commenting and in my comment leaving a link to my site? And am I actually typing the link to my site in addition to my comment OR listing my link in the link field where you put your name and website address? And is the backlink "active" at all times or is it only when someone clicks on it?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm still fairly new to this but I'll do what I can to help you.

First of all, I popped over to check out what Monopolinks is because based on your description it sounded like everyone puts each others links on their sites. Take all those peoples' links off your site if they're not linking to you as well. Because if they're not linking to you, then you're getting absolutely nothing out of the relationship and they're getting a link and possible traffic.

As far as articles go, sometimes they take a while to pick up steam and I actually like to promote mine a bit. I actually have one of my articles listed on the first page of Google for the keyword I was targeting. If your articles aren't getting many views, try writing higher quality articles. If you want your articles read a lot, they have to be interesting. Don't forget to link back to your site from the article.

Backlinking.. Blogs are just one way to backlink. If I'm ever offered a WYSIWYG sort of control panel then I will make sure to use my keyword and link back to my site from that keyword. Most blogs aren't like that so I simply drop my link at the end of the comment (unless it has a field asking for your website, then I drop it there). Make sure your comment is relevant to the blog and has some sort of input. Especially if the blog doesn't have auto-accept for comments. As far as your links being "active," I'm not entirely sure what you mean. Once your link is found by Google and indexed then it will always provide link juice whether people are clicking on it or not.

Another thing you should try is social bookmarking. Just throw something like "social bookmarking sites" (and maybe add dofollow onto that) into Google and you'll find list after list of sites to "bookmark" your site. It might take a while but eventually Google will find your "bookmarks" and they'll provide link juice like a blog comment would (although a comment on a blog with content similar to your own will provide more link juice). Either way, a link is a link.

That's about as far as my knowledge goes at this time, hope it helps.

One note about posting on blogs...do some research about "NOFOLLOW"

Many blogs have nofollow which means when you post a comment and list your pretty website addy, it does not link back to your site. You need to find yourself a list of blogs that do not have the nofollow

Also, five articles is NOTHING! If you are loosing your drive after just 5 articles, you are in for some bad days my friend! Try this...see what articles are getting the hits and target in on the same topics...find a way, somehow, to relate them to your site...

This is very true. I use SeoQuake which allows me to view any pages code so I simply pull that up and do a search for nofollow tags. No nofollow tags, good to go

Thanks for the tips - that helps a lot.

So, as for social bookmarking that do not have nofollow - I assume this means that you join the social bookmarking site and add your link, which then gets "credited" to each and every vote/comment you make... Is this right? Or should you still type in your site's web address for every comment you make?

Deloriagod - Thanks for going over all that for me.
Yes, Monopolinks is supposed to be a place for people to get one-way links, but so far, i'm not really getting any. I thought about taking the links off my site, but I figured I would give it more time in case anyone actually does put links on my page. It's a good idea if it works.

No problem man. I'm still learning and I know some of this stuff can be tough to catch on to so I'm more than willing to share what I've learned.

If links have nofollow tags (rel="nofollow" in the site code) then search engines won't credit those links towards your site. Essentially it was just wasted time to submit to a site like that. However some people will argue that building only dofollow links will look unnatural to Google so you should throw in some nofollow occasionally.

djbventures - you are right. i shouldn't get frustrated after 5 articles, but it feels like I'm putting my heart and soul into it and don't know if it's worth doing if no one sees them. I will try to look at it with a more open mind.

Did you even research your keywords before trying to compete? If you don't get the right keywords and just build backlinks without considering it, then you will hardly see results.
