Yes it is allowed to put backlinks on a daily basis. The number depends on competition, maybe include it here?

What ever you do, don't just quit once satisfied. If you were building 20links per day, don't just stop. Make 10 the other 5 days before you stop for example.

Also the number isn't all that important as the juice of the links.

How many a day is a safe limit (if there is a known limit) ? or is it more down to if they are natural and not just clear spam.

There is no set limit. It depends on your site. If it's new, then a large number of backlinks will look unnatural and suspicious. If your site is already established, then any number should be fine as long as you increase the number of backlinks per day gradually.

From my experience, not all the backlinks get indexed all at once, so a good plan is to increase it each day and when you reach a few months with your website, then start adding press releases etc. Social bookmark your backlinks, this will help you getting them indexed faster. Hope this helps.

There are some holes in the notion of too many instant backlinks looking "suspicious" or crafting a backlinking strategy to look "natural".

The first hole is the mistaken impression that Google crawls multiple times every day. False. Therefore, depending on where your backlinks are coming from, Google may not find these new links for days or even weeks.

The second hole is that hundreds of backlinks showing up in a short period, like a day or so, all at once will raise red flags. If you stop and think about it for a moment, you'll realize that condition alone couldn't possibly be a red flag... otherwise every item on this page:

Digg - The Latest News Headlines, Videos and Images

would be red flagged. You see, that's how the social web actually WORKS. Someone sees something interesting and shares it with others, and suddenly there are hundreds of links to the thing. Google understands and recognizes that.
