I am running some competitions on my website. I am promoting these on the popular competition sites. I am getting a lot of entries and so getting a lot of traffic to my site. Will this extra traffic improve my Google rankings or am I wasting my time with this plan ?

No - it will not. It may improve your conversions, but not your rankings.

Blast I thought it would help my rankings. The traffic I am getting is not good quality because they are just coming, entering the competition and then going. However, I do get the name and email adress added to my list.

Which competition sites are you using?

Search engines follow people. Thus, a constant stream of visitors to your website may also help your website to rank higher.

And: Maybe someone bookmarks your site, maybe someone talks about your site on a forum... This will result in backlinks helping your rankings.

I don't think it will increase your rankings, if that were the case then everyone would just buy those crappy traffic programs and get a #1 ranking. Has anyone who is saying it will help actually tested this?

Run your competitions so that they need to link to you or bookmark your site in order to enter. That way you get the traffic, as well as the links benefits.

Yes John, to enter, they have to come to our site and join our mailing list. I am getting stacks of traffic and my list is growing, I have had 17 in the last 20 minutes. When they get there, there is a free download that they can get there and then. Trouble is, they seem to be entering the comp and then going.

If it was so easy, i would go to stumble upon and get xx,xxxx hits a day fromt there and I should be on top position for my keyword. NO it doesnot work like that! Sometime I see i have 0 traffic to my sites, but it is gradually moving to the first page of google, and BANG when it hits the 1st page, Traffic starts coming.

In short: you can get traffic from ranking BUT not ranking from traffic!

Traffic and ranking are two different things. The search engines do not rate your site according to the number of people that visit it but rather the amount of quality site linking to it. Like i mentioned, if you want to really help your ranking, you need links from quality, high ranking sites.

Google favours highly visited sites with low bounce rates. (if a lot of people come to a website and then choose to stay on that website, google perceives that website as being somewhat valuable. They probably won't know this without some sort of analytics software, like Google Analytics)

Does that mean sites receiving a lot of traffic will get the top position in the serps? No. But thats not the question.

Can it improve your rankings. Of course. But only marginally. i.e., it's true. It's not a major contributing factor.

But don't think Google doesn't take notice of high traffic sites, or worse, don't think Google does take notice of high traffic sites but then chooses to ignore it.

hmmm personally I think that traffic doesnt help your google ranking..everyone would just pay for a few ppc campaigns and you would get mad traffic..then you'd increase your ranking organically..just my opinion.

I don't understand the thinking that more visitors equals better conversions!

If someone can clear that up for me, then great!

If your site was converting 1 in 10 customers (for whatever you're offering), how does getting more traffic mean your conversions are going to improve?

      Last week I got 100 customers and 10 sales = 10% conversion

This week I got more customers (150) and made even more sales (15). Great! Same conversion though!

It helps your bottom line, but does nothing to improve conversion.

Traffic, ie Customers, and Conversion are two varibles that effect your bottom line.

      More cutomers = more money.
      Better conversions = more money

But more customers = better conversions??? Wrong!

Btw, sorry to the posters comment who I quoted. I wasn't singling you out.

EDIT: If you want to improve your conversions you need to improve sales copy, have a more attractive opt-in offer, etc etc. This improves conversions. More traffic improves bottom line.

How do you promote your site in a popular competition sites?

If you're submitting links with your targeted keywords, I believe it will counts as your backlinks. And gaining quality links will improve your rankings too.

Can only increase your PR indirectly and marginally.

Say for example the visitors to your site comment on your site and thereby add relevant content, that is one way it can have an impact on your page rank.

There are other ways but they are all indirect and can only have marginal impact.
