How many keywords to target per site

Hi Guys

I am about to enter a new niche, and will start an article campaign linking back to a blog style site.

My question is, should I use all the possible long tail keywords to target one page, or should I choose 10 or so close variations and target a separate page which is setup to those keywords.

I hope that makes sense, I would end up with 10 or 15 pages in the one site, which are very similar, just tuned to different keywords.

I'm not sure which way would give me better SEO with Google and organic searching

Any help would be great

Cheers

Dave Mee

I like to target 2-5 different keywords for my "home page" then just 1 or 2 on all my other pages. I generally focus my efforts on ranking my home page though and letting traffic flow around the site from there.

I target 2 keywords per page. I also do the exact opposite from deloriagod. I focus on ranking my inner pages. I have good internal linking so juice always flows to my home page no matter what.

    1 parent keyword
    6 to 7 child keywords.
parent keyword given more relevance in home page.
Rest of pages is optimized for child keywords.
Child keywords are to be long tail keywords for best results.

      Hi Dave,

You need to use common sense and ask yourself what would make the most sense to your users. It would be unwise to duplicate your content just to create doorway pages. Instead create pages that are highly focused on your targeted keyword. Create separate pages where you can create distinctly different content. It's not hard, it just requires a little creativity.

        Thanks Guys

So just to make sure I understand it right, separate pages are good, which articles can point to, as long as they have unique content.

Should each page have a link to the product, or link each page back to the home page which then links to the product?

        Thanks

What about for a sales page? How many keywords should you target for a simple sales page with one video on it?

What i do is to target 2 at a time. I try to rank the first 2 and then another set of keywords. And just maintain those that rank already.

Lots of different opinions and I guess this suggests that different things work for different people, but I tend to stick at 2 keywords. It would be interesting if those who run more than 1 site have tried different approaches and measured success against each site/approach.

I use a total of 4-5 keywords for any web page. Two of them I use in Title and 2-3 in the description.

Has anyone any advice on how to link to the product? Do you do it from all your internal pages, or only once on the main page, or both?

        Hi davidmeeonline,

Again use common sense here, if you mention the product somewhere on the page then it makes sense to link to it. This is known as an in-context link and is very useful to your users.

It is a standard convention to provide navigational links on most, if not all the pages of your website. Your navigational links should naturally include links to both your homepage and your offer or product pages.

I usually focus on one main keyword and 2 other related keywords for all my pages so that over time you have lots of different keywords that will increase your traffic. Keyword research on these keywords well depending on how much time you want to spend to get these keywords on the first page of Google.

Having all your keywords on one page would reduce your overall keyword density. I'd recommend two keywords per page max. for better SEO and hopefully rankings.

Yes. Each page should have a link to the product for sure. Have at least one above the fold.

Hopefully the above has answered that.

Best of luck! I hope its a profitable niche you've found!

Target one main keyword and optimize your site for other keywords that flow from that keyworde. eg. weight loss - main - secondary, weight loss program, tips, etc your site will do very well. Cheers!

I work on 3 at a time. I can track it, and distribute the workload properly. Once I am there with 3, I then find then next best 3 and start there. You'll find as you rank for short tail, you grab long tail by default along the way.

It depends on the niche and keyword really. If you are purely trying to rank number 1 on Google for a keyword then build the whole site around that one keyword with a few related keywords mixed into the content. This supports your main keyword and helps a lot, you can find these keywords my typing the main keyword into the wonder wheel on google or just by looking at the keyword suggestions in the keyword tool.

If you are trying to build steady traffic for a few keywords then I would recommend structuring your site with the main keyword in the domain name and main page and then name the other sections with the sub keywords your targeting and build up each page separately.

Just dont over do it with the keywords per page/post!
