How important are keywords in the domain name for SEO?

Hey everyone! This is my first post over here at the warrior forum. I have a ebay business selling movie memorabilia that I'm trying to move into a website business, so I've been doing some research to give me the best chance of success. I have my website designed and everything, but I haven't started actually marketing it yet at all. I want to get everything dialed in before I start trying to brand myself.

That brings me to my question. My current domain is purely a business name, and doesn't include any keywords I'm shooting for. I found an open domain that does include my keywords, but is a bit wordy (4 words). Now this would be harder to remember maybe, but I'm thinking it would improve my chances of hitting the first page of google, which of course is everyone's main goal. What are your guy's thoughts on it? Does keywords in the domain name play a big part in google's algorithm or no?

Hi There, Welcome to Online money making world ..

Your question has been answered many times on this forum.. You might not have observed them. According to google algorithm there is no theoretical evidence that the site will rank if you have keyword in that domain but certainly you will have some edge because you have the keyword in the domain and it will definitely help.

There is plenty of anecdotal evidence that specific keywords in the domain can help, under the right conditions. But not necessarily in a direct manner...

The thing is, depending on the site you are, you may have lots and lots of people linking to you using your domain name. So if your domain is Bobs' Business, Inc. Full Line Bowling Distributor, you will be pretty darn relevant for bobs business, because you will have a bunch of links using that as the anchor text.

So if your domain is buyviagra.com, chances are better that you will get links with your keywords as the anchor text, because they will be their by default when people link using the domain name.

      With me so far?

The point is, boys and girls, that having your keywords in your domain gives you some small bit of control over the anchor text of naturally occurring links that would otherwise be some bland, unhelpful url.

    Interesting.

So would it be in my best interest to go with a longer domain name with keywords as apposed to a short one without? I'm wondering how much of an edge it will give me in the grand scheme of things.

Go for short domain. If the keyword is less competitive then it should not be big difference.

Well the keyword is pretty competitive, although mostly in the vintage market. There are only a couple giant sites that sell the current stuff. I've been trying to find a keyword people search for current movie stuff, but nothing is more popular than around 500 searches/mo.

Maybe since it is so competitive I should do everything I can to improve my chances of making 1st page?

Right, it WILL most definitely give you a leg up if you use the EMD (exact match domain). I say go for it. You can always buy your business-name-domain and redirect it into your EMD for the type-ins!

Just make sure the keyword is the best before you go ahead with it and you use that exact keyword phrase for the domain name.

So is this only effective when using the EMD? My idea was "word keyword keyword.com" so would that be pointless for my seo efforts?

Doing it the way you were thinking wouldn't be completely pointless. Just could make life easier if its "keyword keyword.com" .

But as long as the keyword is in the domain, it gives you a good shot of ranking well in the serps depending on competition and the market you're going for.

Domain name still a best factor of google index, because the keyword are limited.

It really helps to keep keywords in the domain name as it plays the important role in the ranking. Keywords in the domain will normally produce good results when it comes to Serps. So try to find a domain name with an important keyword that is related to your content.

If the domain name is available for the keyword term that you really, must rank for, I say go for it.

Its not the be all and end all, but it definitely helps and is a significant factor in serps.

  • As you said that you site is purely for business purpose.
One question how much URL will you generate with keyword if you want to sell a lot other items?
As per my knowledge it is not feasible to create all link with keyword. I think you should consider a complete optimization of your site which will help you to generate traffic as well as lead.

I too believe that keyword is very important but, it should be domain specific otherwise there is no use.
