Really, people... your pages DON'T exist in a vacuum!

Many of you know that I got started in online marketing before Google even existed. I was doing SEO when you had to try and get ranked in Webcrawler, Infoseek, and Lycos. Altavista came along and became the first-game changer in the search game. Next up was Goto, which proved that PPC search results were viable. In fact, I wrote the first commercially-available Goto campaign bid optimization system, a system I sold for a healthy profit when I recognized that Goto (which had then become Overture) was about to fall off the market lead.

Suffice it to say, I've been around SEO for a long time.

The point of my thread is to simply make sure folks who are newer to the game understand a couple of key points about their sites, their pages, and the SERPs.

The first is that it is your PAGES and not your SITE that is ranked by the top search engines such as Google. People often say: "my site was ranked #3 in Google yesterday but today it is on page 2". Well, not exactly. Your PAGE was #3 for those SPECIFIC keywords and now that PAGE is on the second page for the same keywords.

Each page within your site could rank better or worse for any particular keywords than other pages within your site. Just because your "site" is a health and fitness site doesn't mean that a page in your site won't rank well for keywords that don't seem like a natural fit with the overall theme of your site.

Just remember: you can SEO your site, but where SEO counts the most is on the pages.

The second is that your pages don't exist in a vacuum. Too often I see people here make a post that says something like: "my page was #2 in Google for certain keywords last week, then I did some backlinking over the weekend, and now my page is ranked #6 in Google -- what happened? Did my backlinks kill my ranking?"

Remember, too, people that your pages DON'T exist in a vacuum. If you're working every day to pump your site up in the Google listings, don't you believe that your COMPETITORS are doing the same? While I under the POV, you have to also understand that practically EVERYONE is pumping their pages in the SERPs with just about every known method. When the rankings get shaken up it doesn't mean that you did something WRONG, it may simply mean that your competitors for those keywords did something RIGHT.

You're not the only one trying to get their pages ranked higher.

Ok, so off my soapbox now...

This was a great post to hear about. Very true about doing some linkbuilding to your site and suddenly your rankings decrease. All too often we hear about how google penalized this or penalized that for some crazy reason. The truth is your competitors are trying just as hard as you are to get that number one spot. Maybe instead of blaming google time would be better spent looking at your competitors backlink campaign and seeing if they have added any links and work from there.

Good points, well made. People dont realise that Google etc SERPs are dynamic - ie, they change all the time. Chill out and build for the long term with your money sites.

My pet rant? People posting to ask why their links are not indexed as they check yahoo explorer ten times a day to see if they are in there. Me? I never bother checking anything like yahoo explorer, I would rather spend my time building content and links.

LOL! That's something I say frequently when people ask,
"Gee...I did A,B, and C, still not #1 one! Help! How can I get #1?"

And the sad thing is that people fan the fire by actually telling them
how! As if it were as simple as a,b,c, then D! But wait, we then have
Mr. E and Miss F chime in. Pretty soon we have a whole laundry list...
A perfect list of how to be #1!

    If it were so simple.

In a vacuum. Yeah that's the perfect phrase, I'd say.

Yeah, that's for sure. That's why it can never really be an exact science to get to #1 or page 1 or whatever. We can only make our best guess and what it will take and even when you get there chances are someone else is looking to come along and replace you!

    Good post Steven, thanks.

A useful guide to what Google thinks are your keywords can be found in the Google Webmaster Central main account page. Verify your site(s) there and check back later under the Keywords item (for each site) to see what the Googlebot thinks your most important keywords are. Can be quite an eye-opener, and as Google says on same page, check these to see if your intended audience is being targeted.

If you're not using WMT, you're missing a lot of very useful information about your pages and how Google sees them.

You know, even when I pre-schedule my weekly blog posts (Podcasts) , I go do some keyword research before I start. I'll often reference the Google Webmaster Tools to see what keyword phrases I'm getting ranked on but not yet scoring front page.
I do this all the time myself, yet I hardly hear anyone talk about it. In fact, sometimes I do much better with these keywords than the ones I was actually targetting. Kind of makes me wonder if I should even be doing keyword research at ll

Hey Lee - thanks for this post - yeah, I don't hear people talk about it either - but it's just such a naturally intuitive way of finding where you want to be! I've kinda redefined my idea of Keyword Research b/c I frequently go into the Google WMT first so that I can see what keywords are performing well and what keywords aren't. And since - of course - I want to get on the front page for all my keywords, that's where I start from.

    Another factor to consider...

Many people repeat certain searches on a regular basis. If I'm interested in finding fishing reports for a certain area, I'm going to search something like "fishing reports" +(location), maybe daily.

If I get the same ten sites on page one every time I look, why should I keep looking? I'll just bookmark the sites and visit them directly.

I'm convinced that Google and the other search engines shake things up periodically for exactly this reason, at least in part. It keeps the habitual searchers coming back to see what's new...
