Stuck on Position 2

Hey warriors,

I have a website that is 4 months old. I started building links i was rising on the rankings relatively fast. About 2 months ago i got into position number 2 for 2 keywords. Since then i have not been able to rise for number 1.

I have been getting links from blogs, a few forum forum profiles a lot of article marketing and also using web2.0 sites to post my articles.

Regarding page optimization, my page probably is not as well optimized as the number 1, but it is not far from it.

About links, i used SEO Spyglass because it seems to be the more accurate tool. It showed more than 700 links for the page i am trying to rank, and only 13 links for the number one(13 links with very little PR 0-2).

The page on number 1 is not an authority site like wikipedia or amazon. It has PR0 like mine.

From what i have learned so far from SEO, backlinks are about 70% of the ranking. My page has a LOT more links and it is well optimized. That´s why i don´t get it why i am still stuck on position 2.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks
Fabio

  • Hi Fabio

My suggestion would be to just keep on keeping on Keep building quality, relevant links and work on keeping your your content fresh and useful. It's most likely just a matter of time...

    Hope that helps!
  • Good question, but I think there is no more you can do. There are many examples of sites ranking high and having next to no backlinks, or very little.

Sometimes these sites just rank for no reason at all! Sometimes these are just CRAP blogspot sites or crap pages, I've seen more than a few. There is NO way to explain it. These crap sites linger in the top 10 of fairly popular search terms for a very long time, maybe years!

I think this is where backlinks has hit the stone wall. But I have been wondering the same thing as you for a long time, and my conclusion is, that site has been conferred some kind of "blessing" by Google (or maybe someone within Google), and there is really nothing you can do about it, even if you have better content and many more links....

Sad but that is the reality. Just accept it and move on to other keywords.
  • some times position 2 get more ctr than position 1, so you still getting as much as same benefit as position 1.
  • Is any of the keywords in their URL?

Also what's the age of their website... you mentioned yours is rather new.

Give it some time, unfortunately it takes quite a bit of time.

Also, even if they don't' have a lot of backlinks, but they are from higher PR (I know you mentioned only 0-2 or 0-3), but if it's still higher than yours, the quality of the backlink is more important than the quantity.

    • The number 1 spot is 3 months older than my site.

I said that some of their backlinks were form PR2, but i also have better quality links because i have a 20+ PR4, 10 PR3 and a few PR2and PR1

And both keywords are on the url. Not in the domain but on the page itself. e.g. example.com/keyword

  • There may be some other factors like domain age. Also your competitor site may have more reputable links may be less link than yours. Just wait for your turn, and keep doing your efforts but don't try too hard that may harm your 2nd position also.

    • I am getting 5-6 % CTR, so it´s low but normal for a position 2. This is my first time one 1st page of google so i do not know what CTR to expect form number 1, but i have heard that is about 25%. So it will be a huge boost, about 4x more.

  • Keep working on building quality links. Start building a network of sites you can build up and work on getting links from. Use a variety of linking sources and you should take the 1st spot shortly.

    • The truth is, you never know 100% of what your competitor has done,
is doing, or how google values the site. That includes how many backlinks
      that count.

      If you missed this thread:

It is true. Google can get it wrong or just plain and simply loves one site over
      another for reason X.

  • Do you know how many links you are competing against for the site in position #1? Likewise, time is also against you. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Be happy with the results you have achieved in the short time you have been at it.
  • I think i have been building links the wrong way.

I was searching on google for some tips for my problem and i found a site about it. In there there was an article about building links from 2.0 sites and article directories. He/She was saying that creates new accounts with different ips everytime he/she posts something on those web2.0 and article directories.

Does anyone does this? Is this true?
  • more higher pr links with better on site optimization should see you be pushed over on the next serp change
  • I've had this happen and no matter how many articles and backlinks I throw at it it never seems to work, then I tried home page backlinks. They're were critical. I got some high PR home page links and the site jumped to number 1 for 4-5 keywords in a week or two.

    • I have top ranking for some pages where the only thing I did was put in a few low quality links (besides creating the page). And all the other competitors are throwing the house and everything into the pan to get up there, and all I can think of is, if Google really likes a page or site, you really cannot do much about it.

I am also trying to overtake a lousy blogspot with several posts in total, created two years ago that hardly has any links to it, and so far been trying for months - still failed. My content is far superior, and my links are way more.....what gives?

So again, if that page or site has got "the Google blessing", and you have tried so hard to overtake it and failed, my advice is - leave it, go work something else; otherwise you might even end up harming your current position and more importantly, waste a lot of time and effort, when you could be doing something else.

Remember at the end of the day, Google has an "X Factor" to it, where it is impossible to calculate the result, as in X number of links and X number of page elements will guarantee X position. You can't do that with humans, and Google's "aim" is to become as human as possible, though that's still far in the future....

Have you heard the saying - Do your best, leave the rest?
