Hey guys,

Im a fairly new member here but have been lurking the forums for the past couple of months.

I setup a wordpress blog about 2 weeks ago and currently its ranking 2nd on Google for its keyword. Sometimes it even ramps up and takesover the 1st position.

The keyword gets searched 1900/month (broad) and 1600/month (exact) as per google keyword tool .

However, I have no traffic whatsoever coming to the site. Not even 5 visitors. All the traffic which is about 50 visitors in total since the site was put up is through 4 articles I submitted to Ezine. But now thats even dead.

Any ideas?

I put up the site and submitted the articles on the same day 2 weeks ago. Articles got approved within a week and then I saw 20 visitors over the next 2 days and from there on in it has just touched 50 visitors in total. Which I'm sure have come from the articles because thats the source google analytics is showing.

Since the traffic is about 50 per day, it would be difficult to get any traffic if there are sponsor ads above your fold.

One of my site was recently the number one position in one niche which has a search volume of 2,200 a day however my weblog show there are less than 100 visitors. Reason: there are 3 sponsor ads above my site.

Im using Google keyword tool and as far I have read here on the forums thats probably the most accurate.

    I don't get 50 visitors/day, I HAVE gotten 50 visits in total in about 2 weeks time.

When you check your ranking make sure to log out of your Google account first. Sometimes that throws the search counts off and makes it appear as if your site is ranking higher than it really is. Then if that doesn't give you the headsup to what is going on you should download Domain Samurai and see what kind of exact daily search counts are coming in. One way or the other something is off.

-Don't trust GEKT data 100%. Its meant to give you IDEA not the exact amount of web search count.

-You should also check if the keyword is seasonal.

-To get a more accurate data try google search based keyword tool(SBKT). It seems to provide more accurate data. If you have another websites, you can verify how accurate SBKT is by comparing the data you get from Google webmaster tool to that of SBKT. Usually the data you get from GEKT is inflated because the data comes from Google search network which includes non search engine sites.

ranking 2nd on google in 2 weeks is a great thing, but it's an unstable position... I've ever had this situation and there is no traffic... as i wait for a couple of days then i found that the site is gone in no where...dont now why but that's the fact...so 2nd position google with new domain has no relation with traffic... cmiiw

      Hi Osman_M,

First, I would double check that position, by going to Scroogle Scraper. It is possible that your Personal Web Search history has biased the SERP rankings. Logging out of your Google account no longer disables PWS.

Those numbers don't sound right, you will typically see 3-10 times the traffic from broad vs exact. I would double check the numbers and look for a possible data outlier situation. Check the monthly search volume trend, it often shows evidence of data outliers. Have someone you trust double check those number in GAKT, many folks have difficulty understanding the proper way to select exact match data.

      Hi mistermint,

The GAKT is about as good as it gets, the problem is that folks often don't take the time to learn how to use it properly.

If your site was simply copied and remained unchanged when you moved it to your new host I would suspect the host may have blocked the Googlebot from crawling your website. Add your site to your Google Webmaster Tools account and check the diagnostics.

Does your site have a good summary thing on google? Like your meta description--is it nicely worded and appealing to what people want to see? Meta description is your chance to make your site have a nice "hook" to viewers on google.

Try searching through an anonymous proxy. If you have been checking your results often, or are logged into your Google analytics while searching, Google may remember what you were searching for and show it as #1 when in fact you could really be on page 2.

I have tried everything folks listed above, Im still in 2nd position. I have even gotten one of my friend to check from a totally different area and obviously a different IP, still the same result.

About the exact search count being 1600 and broad being 1900, thats 100% from google keyword tool. When I was doing my keyword research I found that also astonishing but as I did more keyword research, I discovered many keywords that had big exact volume and also not too far away was the broad search count. So thats not a rarity, it just takes research and you will come across keywords like that.

Analytics and webmaster tools are reporting the samething and both have there codes embedded in the site properly.

This is something beyond me, I just don't understand. I will try altering my description to see what happens.

Totally different area as in totally different country? If that's not the case try to search via a local proxy or alternatively use this tool: searchenginereports.net/

I am ranked 3rd in google.com for any IP of my country, but if I search behind a US proxy I'm on the 5th page.

I have read that you can rank on the first page of Google for big KWs, but unless you are in the top 5, pref 3 then you might as well be on page 100. Most people only use the top 5, me personally normally get what I wanted with the first site alone.

    Update:

Have claimed spot #1 for my keyword but still the same result. Nothing to be proud of. I have been doing a lot reading and found many test keywords to see if people are actually typing them in.

    For example:
    -setup an ppc campaign
    -throw your keywords in
-make an ad totally irrelevant to the keywords
    -check for impressions
-if you got some then the keyword should be good to go

    Does that sound about right?

It's only been two weeks so give it some time however....

Is anyone actually seeking you out?

For example I could set up a blog - purplefluffywidgets.com about purple fluffy widgets and their usefulness for welding (not), I could have a FAQs page all about purple fluffy widgets and I could update my blog daily.

Because I have put the work in, my place at the top of Google for a keyword search 'purple fluffy widgets' is guaranteed!

But there actually has to be a market for my widgets for people to actually be typing-in that search - and then to want to visit my site because they are sooooo interested.

Someone actually has to want what I'm offering.

If you are at the top for months and no-one visits then, the answers obvious.

There are probably two reasons I can think of...

      1. Low search volume for your keywords to begin with.
      2. Search results are NOT the same everywhere. Which means, if you're ranked #1 or 2 in your home region...doesn't mean you rank the same elsewhere.

And especially if you're using US-based search volume data...you may actually be ranked lower in the US than at home.

    I think I know the problem :p
The keyword tool estimation is probably local to USA. Are you searching from within the US?
Say, for India or Singapore the keyword phrase might in all probability be getting no more than 200 searches per month.

To check your rank within US,
    Type in google.com/ncr
Search for the keyword. Once it returns a result, go to the end of the url and add in &gl=us and refresh the page.
    (or)
    Use a US proxy.

ya being logged into gmail can give a false high ranking

Those keyword tools can be way off base at times. I would continue working on getting traffic for other keywords and work on promotion elsewhere. You might have yourself a keyword that just doesn't do well.

And that would suck if you have a bunch of high sponsored listing ahead of your listing.

The page title tag is what shows in Google as the first line of the results and the next 2 links almost always come from your "description" meta tag. Are those attractive words? Do they Sell the click? Do they offer a solution to the problem someone searching that term is having? Do they offer something someone searching that term would want? Do they motivate?

That should help some. What is the keyword?

Does your site suck? I am not saying that to insult you, but ask yourself that, your visitors do.

The best way to test a keyword is to do adwords and track if it converts. No idea if you have the budget for that but it is proof. I use Market Samurai for most keyword research. The have a calculation for Phrase to Broad match percentage. Some terms show high in broad match but are not natural phrases anybody actually searches because the phrase match is very low. The show this as a percentage. I also evaluate keywords to use based on if people are paying high for them in adwords, which MS also shows. Sometimes I will check the traffic the sites ranking high for a term are getting in compete.com. I do see sometimes a term supposedly having thousands of searches a month and the #1 site is only getting a few hundred total.

Keywords are also a reflection of a market so the better you understand any market the more likely you are to be able to see what it wants.

I checked with Scroogle and I now have the answer. I'm actually ranked quite a bit lower than Google was showing me and alas am not getting the traffic I was expecting as such.

There's always an answer, thank you for providing one for this particular problem for me.

The keyword gets searched 1900/month (broad) and 1600/month (exact) as per google keyword tool .
The google keyword tool does not tell you the whole truth. When you use it, the statistics come from google affiliate search engines as well. So the number you see is actually smaller for both broad and exact. Also, you need to select a country as well. If you select worldwide you will also get scewed results because Google is not the same everywhere. If you search in australia, then google would bring up more australian sites compared to the US...

Lastly, maybe you have written a poor title and description meta tag so that users are not so interested in your site. Consider reviewing this and make a compelling meta description and title...this is a BIG key to get ppl click on your listing compared to the rest...

I hope that helped you some..

for every 100 visitors you get, if one buys that is a 15 CTR(click thorugh rate). the CTR you will get depends on what market you are in and lots of other factors, but you can only expect sales when you have had enough visitors to 'make a sale'. So if you ove only had 50 visits then dont expect any sales yet as ou ve not had enough people see your site.
A 1% minimum CTR is what you should expect -unless you are making a big profit each sale

You might be top of Google, but if no one is searching for your keyword, the traffic will not come, it could also depend on the seasonal traffic, certain sites differ in terms of traffic based on the seasons, or it could be you might be viwewing the search results when logged in to your Adwords account, that tends to give misleading placements

Check the result on a multiple Google data center search and make sure you are getting accurate results. I have a hard time believing that much traffic is going by you with no flow to your site. I know that results can be skewed but they are still a reflection of real traffic. You should be getting at least 5 visitors a day to your site.

I also agree that your Meta description should not just be keyword loaded it is your opportunity to entice traffic onto your site.

Lastly if there is a good bit of traffic #1 will land you over 3x the traffic that #2 lands
you. Before you write this keyword off see what you can get from a #1 rank and make
sure your analytics on the site is working. You can test the analytics by going to your site from several IP addresses and logging the number of hits to the site against at least
    ten different IP addressees.

    Good luck.

    Any ideas?
TO be frank, 1900/month (broad) and 1600/month (exact) is very very less. If you divide it by 30. u get nearly 30 searches / day..... Can u still except "Traffic" .

I would advice you to increase your "kw base". Can u tell me what are your kw's??

A site has recently been the number one in a niche market, which has a search volume of 2200 days, however, my blog seems to be less than 100 visitors. Reason: 3 sponsor ads on the site.

Ya I am going also thinking that the sponsored ads could be stealing your traffic. I know that I tend to ignore sponsored ads when performing searches normally. If the search results aren't what I needed, then I start looking at the ads.

As others have said sponsored ads. It depends on whether your searchers are internet novices or not and whether the sponsored ads answer the question so to speak.

How tech savvy is your niche(how often do you think your niche uses the internet)?
