Profile Linking/Blog Commenting is dead....or is it?

More and more people are subscribing to the message that profile linking and blog commenting are dead as strategies. I read on here the other day from a self-proclaimed "SEO", that profile links are "worthless".

I reckon the opposite is actually true.

But what are the real experts saying?

How about Rand Fishkin over at SEOmoz? This is what he said recently:

"On nearly every commercially lucrative search results I pull up these days, I see bad links pushing bad sites into the top rankings at Google."

Ok, that's pretty clear. As Rand would classify bad links and bad sites as the money makers nearly all of us create, its obvious that "bad" links, ie user generated ones still work.

How about "Gray Wolf"?

"Build great content and users will find you” isn’t valid anymore. The fact they still spread this propaganda makes me sick."

Remember, these people are at the top of the industry, shoulder-rubbers with the likes of Matt Cutts, not nobodies claiming expertise.

I reckon that user-generated links are still working. If you are ignoring this message, you can bet your last dollar that the guy ranking above you has not. This post is not advocating any particular course of action, white, grey or black, however, this is a "real world" forum rather than a idealistic one, I think, so what do you think?

    I would tend to agree.

They're working, to an extent, but the search engines are watching the methods people use and adjusting results accordingly. Remember when forum links carried a lot of weight? They're still fairly significant but marketing yourself or your business is now 'up close and personal' i.e. doing it yourself on social networks. As it has been for 15 years+.

Just followed you on twitter, btw.

Thanks for the follow. I agree that the search engines, ie Google watch, but then consider what Rand Fishkin also said in the same post:

"In the last 12 months, I've seen (or, at least, felt) less progress from Google's webspam team than in any previous year I can remember. Popular paid link services that Google's search quality folks are clearly aware of have worked for months on end (some have done so for years). Crummy, low quality directories and link exchanges have made a comeback since the big shutdowns in 2007-8. Even off-topic link exchanges, which experienced their own blowback in 2006-2007 have started working again. Horrifyingly bad sites are ranking atop the results using little more than exact match domain names and a few poor quality links. There's even a return of the link farms of the early 2000s, with operators creating (or buying old domains and converting them into) junky, one-page sites to boost their own link popularity."

So I'm not sure how much google is watching. The implication of that post to me is that just maybe the fear of the Google bogeyman has been over-stated by the kings of marketing themselves to keep everyone in check, kinda like religion used to ;-)

I agree about social marketing, however, as you note, the latest twitter/facebook thing is just a modern extension of what has always worked in business - networking.

And interestingly, profile links and blog comments bring one of the fastest SEO results. Press Releases are inlcuded here, too.

personally I am not a big fan of profile links unless you are going to be at least participate in the community a little bit.

When it comes to blog commenting I would highly recommend posting comments that actually contribute to the discussion, otherwise you are wasting a lot of peoples time!

Profile backlinking is the best if you have to link back to your site with your desired keywords.

Well...they have helped me rank some pretty "lame" content at an article directory in the past. So, perhaps they are "worthless" for some people, but that could be a footprint factor where people build massive numbers of profile links on certain platforms during very short time intervals and Google is able to identify and discount outbound links from the websites where "monthly packages" are being spammed.

    How about "Gray Wolf"?

"Build great content and users will find you" isn't valid anymore. The fact they still spread this propaganda makes me sick."
My personal experience is that quality, relevant, well-themed content with backlinks will kick butt. Without the backlinks great content in nearly all moderately competitive niches, and many low competition niches as well, will probably never see the light of day. Once your great content is ranked and visible, then you do in fact start sloooooooowly picking up unsolicited, genuine one-way backlinks from other webmasters (that is if you get really lucky).

I believe that backlink spam is a massive problem on the web and is not likely to go away anytime soon unless Google elects to discount all links. Then where does that leave them? Keyword spamming, etc., etc. Personally I would love to just create great content that benefits my website visitors. Without devoting a major portion of my time to backlink spam (spun articles, phony blogs, profile links, irrelevant social bookmarks, useless RSS feeds, blog comment spamming) my well researched content is worth about as much as used toilet paper.

So yes, user generated backlinks work. Even the purest among us eventually have to resort to backlink spam because no real "Authority" website is likely to voluntarily give the typical newly built affiliate/adsense/info product site a legitimate backlink without major financial compensation. Nearly all of us started our internet ventures with the best of intentions: deliver value and they will come. Once that delusion wears off we gradually enter the ranks of link spammers or quit. I mean really...please give me a break here...who in their right mind truly wants to spend their time prowling forums and blogs and make "meaningful posts that deliver value" to get a stinking backlink?

Oh, that reminds me...the major corporations are in the link spamming game as well. The niche where I make my money is being heavily spammed by the industry leaders. I know because I outrank nearly all of them and they have repeatedly tried pushing their links onto several of my link feeder sites. These are companies that run advertising campaigns offline in magazines and on television and I just happily deny their posts.

As with all things, there are exceptions to the rule and the above is just my opinion...your mileage may vary...but most of us have had to resort to doing things we never intend to do to compete on the web. Sorry for the lengthy rant.

Wasn't the 'Mayday' update supposed to deal with this?

As I understand it, the Mayday update placed more weight on overall domain authority and less on anchor text of links?

My experience tells me that these kind of links still work, but nowhere near enough to stand alone.

Any sort of links to your site will benefit.

    Profile links or otherwise.

There's always going to be someone saying that some form of something is dead.

    But that's just BS.

Google built their search engine on links! So the more you get the better you rank.

    Get more links!

    From more IPs!

    From more sites!

The more you get the higher your site goes.

They are still good. I know this for a fact. I have several niches and guess what they all use profile links. However, it is best to mix it up with all kinds of link building and you will be amongst the tops of Google. They are not dead but for the love of god don't use them as your primary link building MIX IT UP
