I have found an affiliate product I want to promote. The name of the product contains 5 words and a total of 36 characters. It is available to register as a .com does it matter that it is quite long and quite hard to read when all together? I don't suppose anyone would ever have to type it in its purely for SEO purposes. Will it make a difference?

Well I don't think it should matter considering people Probably won't get to the site by merely typing it in directly, but rather through a different means, plus you're probably not considering branding people to the url and hoping for return visitors? Consider how infrequently you look at a url to a site you only visit once.

first find out how competitive the niche is...how many people type it in globally in a month..etc...check google keyword tools and other sites.

yeah that's why the #1 online dating is okcupid.com and the newest
one chose zoosk.com.....see those keywords just in your face? NOT!

Websites are ranked, more specifically urls. Not domains. It's what
you do with the site. It's what you do after you choose a domain
that counts. Man that icanhazcheezburger.com site gets absolutely
no traffic because of that silly domain. Zillow.com just does not
cut it in the real estate market.....funny how the sites with vision
seem to pick the coolest sounding name...

Now don't get me wrong. A short "keyword" domain can be cool.
But it's a moot point. That's why amazon went with amazon.com.
They had vision, foresight, and set themselves for the future.

I have no idea why people don't want to do the same....
Pennies or dollars? Which do you prefer? Pennies, or dollars from
        hard work?

I know. The parlor tricks are next. See, joe shmo has the #1 site
for blue widgets with apples by having bluewidgetswithapples.com.
        Yeah. Like that matters....

If people spent their time actually learning SEO instead of spending
hours picking a domain name, they might get somewhere.

Just look at this forum...people worried about hyphens, dot info,
etc. instead of worrying about their actual website pages. Pity.

Come on people. Google just bought out like.com
Does anyone know what like.com is about by that domain?
And yet they flat out OWNED their niche!

        Paul

The longer it is, the lower the competition for it will be.......Flip side, is how many people will type that many characters before settling for something less?
