In need of some SEO expert's advice : too many comments on my blog posts?

hello warriors and thanks in advance for your time.

I have a fairly popular blog with a few super popular articles ( +500 comments).

these pages have lost some positions on the serps and I suppose all those comments are starting to hurt :

A/ they dilute the article's optimisation
B/ more importantly I think, the pages have become too slow to load.

So i just added a plugin to limit comments to fifty per page, and I have a little navigation (1,2,3,4,5,...) to go through all the comments.

But with this solution, is google going to think I have duplicate content as the bot will see several time the same article but different comments ? (1-50, 51-100, etc...)

Has anyone ever encountered this situation? What do you think about my fears ? (content dilution and more importantly, slow pages)?
What is IYO the most appropriate solution ?

Thanks

Are you saying that each time visitors click on different pages of comments, every time that same article appears?

If you feel your post comments hurts your Post Rank in SERPs than you use "Do-Ffollow" tag for comments.

good move limiting the number of comments on your pages. Don't stress out over the duplicate content so much G understands these things happen.

hope you are right about that, i'm really not sure G is so sharp on duplicate content issues : i've seen a lot of articles suffer from being duplicated on higher PR social platforms which proves for one thing that Google can't really tell which is the original copy

All the more reason to make sure that your articles are indexed before submitting them anywhere...

I would be worried on two fronts here.

    1) The more outgoing links your page has the more big G thinks of it as spammy.

    2) Do you really want your visitors to leave your website through someone elses link?

The solution to your problem would be to set your blog to remove all hyperlinks from your comments.

This will in turn increase the quality of the comments because if people are going to leave a comment without a outgoing link you can expect higher quality.
