301 redirect VS this...

We have two scenarios. I'm in an on going debate with a friend about which is most beneficial for 'main site' SEO.

Currently we have 1 blog pointing to the main site. (Blog 1). However we want a total of 3 blogs all together and have all of them linking to the main site.

OPTION 1:

301 redirect blog 1 to another domain and pass the link juice. Then create 2 new blogs. So we have the current blog redirected and then the 2 new blogs linking to the main site. (and between each other).

OPTION 2:

Do not 301 redirect blog 1. Keep blog 1 as it is (no more blog posting) and leave it to become a static website and have the content age. Link this static blog to main site. Then create 3 new blogs and have all 4 websites linking to the main site. (and between each other).

Please vote on the poll. And more importantly, explain your reasons why. I'd really appreciate any feedback. I'm convinced with one of these options, although I do believe it is close.
#301 #redirect

    Option 2, but don't interlink them

    Yeah, might as well spread it out a bit.

    If you aren't going to continue to get links coming into the blogs though, I would probably go for a 301 and call it good. Are these self-hosted blogs?

      @Brad

      All self hosted, yes.

      The new blogs will all have links coming into them. We could do some link building to the static blog in option 2. All the new blogs in both cases will generate links to them through a bunch of different ways.

      What's your argument for not interlinking them? I used to be under the impression link exchanges were fairly useless for SEO, but now I've been told from multiple people that link exchanges are great.

    Yes interlinking your blogs each other is very good think. It will be useful to get more visitors on your site.

    I wouldn't interlink them because that leaves a footprint for Google. INterlinking them gives a detectable 'linkwheel' pattern.

    I've moved to what I call 'link ladders' now.

    I have seperate 'ladders' where each rung is a site think links to the one under it and eventuall ends up at my money site.

    Example

    ezinearticle-->blogger-->free wordspress-->squidoo lens-->money site

    That's a 4 rung ladder.

    I can always come in at the top and add another rung.

    A rung can be more then one site/link as well.

    Inm the above example I have a 'ladder' where I have 3 ezinearticle that point to the next run underneath.

    I don't link between ladders because I dont' want to associate them with each other.
