Hi,

Is it a better to challenge a big name in ones niche for a place in Google's top 5 results or a fellow internet marketer who is promoting with vigor?

Who gives a ****. It's better to just find the keywords you want to rank for, analyse the competition on the front page for each of them, and then pick your fights wisely.

I wouldn't worry about who it is that you are competing with, concentrate more on what the statistics are telling you

Challenge yourself first, and then one competitor at a time, or you will risk getting overwhelmed by the process..

I think he means, better to take on a term that is owned by a big company like amazon, or to take on a marketer like him who knows the SEO tricks and is going hard?

Fair question, but as other said above - look at the inbound links, the in title, keyword density, all the things are are taught to do, then you will know before you even start what your chances of a top 5 are.

BTW - You really should only try if you can get top 3. Most of the traffic is in 1 and 2, and 3 aint bad, but Top 5 is not really a good goal IMHO

As far as I can tell Amazon doesn't have a team, trying to rank for terms, They leave it to their horde of affiliates... and SEO tricks does not mean blackhat, maybe a bit of gray

Obviously, Amazon has a lot of trust and will get fairly high rankings much more easily than Joe Blow's Internet Marketing Splog, but that doesn't mean outranking them is hard at all - at least not at this stage. You could probably train a monkey to do it. Getting past Amazon is rarely a problem. Wikipedia, on the other hand.... well, it sucks, and I wish it died. Luckily, most products (unlike types of products) never get listed on Wikipedia, and there's tons and tons and tons of them you can rank for very easily.

I was able to rank one of my clients one page one in gooogle.ca ahead of several big banks and insurance companies. I guarantee you, the banks and insurance companies had bigger budgets then my clients. It is all about knowing what to do, and most importanly, doing it. If you have the time and are willing to put in the effort, there is no reason you can't be #1,2 or 3, regardless of the niche.

Thanks everyone. I know this person whose blog ranks no.2 for a term that a good number of people use. His competitors are other website owners like him, which may not be the case with me, so I wanted some opinions on the matter. Regards

  • When it comes to Google’s ranking everyone that is before you is a competitor whether it is a global brand or a home based business. Once the visitor comes to your website then it is a different ball game. This should help you to set your priorities.
