Google vs Bing... same top 10 results?

Has anyone noticed that the top 10 results are often the same, particularly "local"?

Is Bing using Google's search API or is this just fluke?

I was looking up some local real estate info and found either 9 out of 10 or 10 out of 10 being the same (not necessarily the same order though).

Thought it was a little strange.

I tried Bing for a while and dump it. It's slow and return unrelevant results for my search. I would wait for it to stablised before trying it again.

Google is doing fine at the moment but lately I notice a bit of quality drop in google.

I've never had problem finding info on any of the search engines. I think it is basically down to brand name and personal preference.

yeah, it depends on the researcher on what info he or she gets from a particular search engine,
bing is good, but I am used to google

Well how many businesses can you expect to see? There's only so much real
estate. Look at all the phone books, yellow pages, etc. of course they are
going to have the same listings. Each city has it's own car dealers,
eateries, gas stations, etc. If a neighborhood has 6 gas stations, what other
    results are going to show?

Bing doesn't duplicate Google's listings at all. Before one of my sites was listed in the top few spots in Bing and Google placed me on the second page. When Google moved me up to number one, Bing dropped me down to the second page. Its like they flip flopped. Its okay anyway though since its way better traffic.

I understand that... I wasn't looking for specific businesses, just a keyword phrase that is local (and returns 167,000 results with quotes). There *are* many MANY more results than "6" or ten... I just thought it was interesting that Bing had almost the same results as Google...

like, Optimized in one/Optimized in Both? (It used to be that some engines ranked totally different, you always got different results, even if you were in the top 10 on both - most would be different).

Thanks. Bing is better traffic, is that which one you were referring to?

Both Bing and Google actually try to accomplish the same things, but hey, Google has two g's in it and Bing only one!

Seriously though, the two algos are of course somewhat different but they try to accomplish the exact same thing: to return the most authoritative and relevant results. Google has been good at it for quite some time, and Bing is getting better too! SEOmoz has been watching and measuring Bing for some time now and theyhave recently found that Bing's SERPs... are evolving toward Google's SERPs!

Anyway for what it's worth, I have just collected (and vented) my thoughts on Bing SEO here, based on published sources. Did I miss anything?

If a phrase is "local," how many tops spots for that "local" phrase do you think
there would be? No matter how you slice it, top for local-locale-whatever would almost
assuredly have to be similar. But once you got past the top 5 or 6, the rest would
be different. You are not going to get 167,000 results that are the same.

Authority site is an authority site, for the specific subject at hand.

A local phrase near me would be mentone beach. Sure enough, top results
are the same. I would expect nothing less. Now tweak the search for
let's say, visiting mentone beach, and voila! Results are radically different.
Incidentally, there is no real mentone beach here. Local only phrase,
          So Cal.
