Directories really work?

I have seen a lot of threads about directories list. I have to say, though some of the directories are high PR, but sometimes, you have to pay for them.

And for those free ones, you have little chance to be listed. Then when you are listed, it is barely impossible for you appear in the homepage, and the the PR leaks.

So, what is the real solution? And does that directories really work?

Will appreciate any answers.

Cheers~

Some directories work. Some are useless. You can spot them a mile off after a while.

Well said. You should evaluate the quality of any link you are paying for. Directories are no different. Free directories are often a waste of time.

I think there are a (very) few high value directories - the remaining 99% are a waste of your time.

I don't know if 99% are a waste of time. I would say that 99% of free directories are a waste.

It takes time for all directories to approve your website. Maybe it take up to 1 year too for some directories as Dmoz. But it normal cases it takes some months that your website to be approved. After that, you can check the rank of your website on search engines.

Well that depends what you want to achieve, id you are looking for
backlinks where you control the anchor text in order to increase your
rank into the search engines, then any directory that allows you to
send your article should work fine.

But if you are looking not just to get the backlinks, but to attract real
viewers from the directories, then what you should do is to install
google analytics, send your article to several article directories (no matter
if they are the same one) and then see what article directory is sending
you real visitors and which one doesnt.

    Hope it helps

That is one problem with free directories. They get hundreds of submissions/day- mostly crap. It take time to review all those sites.

Paid directories are much faster. I often review/approve paid submissions within minutes.

Directories work almost as good as putting a bumper sticker on your
      car with your domain.

Seriously, there's yahoo (iffy), dmoz (more iffy now), and...and...
I think there are some that are owned by reputable warriors, but the
amount of directories that are actually worth it could be counted on
at most two hands, probably one.

99%? I'd go higher: 99.9999999% Even that is generous.

This is different than niche directories for services like angieslist.
Those are a whole different animal.

I think Yahoo and DMOZ still help plus a handful of human edited directories, but I put most of my link building in other directions.

I will only use 2. DMOZ and dir.yahoo.

Dont even bother with directories. they are being valued less as days pass by. Instead, put that money into building valuable content and market your site.

I don't think blog directories worth spending time on. Instead try article directories

i strongly disagree. All links are good links, and if you have a site that ranks well, using directories to quickly diversify the backlink anchor text can help it rank for variations really quickly. i wrote about it on my blog and seowizz wrote something similar short after.
