The (questionable) value of SOC or "Strength of Competition"

MicroNiche Finders "Strength of Competition" - SOC - is a calculation combining the 'inurl', 'intitle', and 'inanchor' numbers. As such, you aren't actually getting a measure of the strength of individual competition, but rather more a measure of whether there is wide use of that keyword phrase out there (in URL's, title tags, and anchor text links).

SOC doesn't account for the strength of individual pages, but rather makes an assumption that if the keyword phrase is found in great numbers as above, than the competition is likely to be much higher.

In some respects that is true, but more as a relative measure.

For instance, the Top 10 pages can be monsterously strong, but if they're appearing for a keyword phrase that isn't a 'high volume' phrase, the SOC number won't reflect that.

SOC should only be used as one datapoint. By itself, you're virtually guaranteed to be going blind.

You *always* need to check the individual strengths of those Top 5 or Top 10 pages - Broad Match - before committing resources.

I've also found the time it takes to rank, and rules of the game change. For example, the MayDay update really thwacked long tail keyword issues.

Tools are good for finding "openings". Use tools as away to eliminate the "bad keyword" and most of the time tools like MNF will leave lots of good ones but you still have to do abit of manual assessment.
