Which is better: Static Page or Blog?

I have a niche site that's setup on Wordpress. I can't decide which is better...having the homepage be a static page that has links to the most popular articles, categories and some other stuff - or - the homepage shows the blog that, well, looks like a blog with each post shown in chronological order, with a sidebar.

Does it matter in the SERPs? I wonder because my keyword density on the static page is much higher, since there is hardly any content on that page.

Which one is better?

Much love. Thanks!

  • Either one will work. I have several sites on page one that are static.
  • Thanks for the quick reply - so it doesn't matter at all? I'm sure both could be ranked, but I'm going for optimal settings, if possible.

    • It really depends - if you're targeting a tough keyword long term it's probably safer to keep that first page static with optimized content. But if it's a static page you should optimize it carefully and make sure it's quality content.

If you're trying to build up a following and are going to post regularly I'd probably stick with a standard blog, your regular readers will want to see new content when they visit.

  • static page are great, i got PR2 in just a month.... but in blog, i have to do much customization to get PR1... its difficult.... but both of those site are working good according to the way you maintenance it..
  • I make my Front page static AND have a blog page on a lot of my sites. The static front page serves what ever your main message is and the blog page if for adding content to make Mr. Giggle happy.
