Anyone else struggle ranking inner pages?

For some reason, I can get my home pages of my websites to rank well, but I have a hell of a time with the inner pages, regardless of how optimized they are. Anyone know what it takes to get those pesky inner pages to rank well in the search engines? Or, is a simple matter of just doing more work?

Regards,
Dino

Probably the simple matter of doing some more work.

Are you doing much in the way of deep-linking, and in relation to time, how much 'struggle' are you talking about?

It can just take a while if its a competitive market.

Well, my home page shot to the number one spot after a few weeks of optimization so not too competitive. I've found that for all my sites, inner pages have always lagged and have almost never ranked well. Been doing some heavy direct linking to those inner pages as well.

Google must give much more credit to home pages in its algorithm. The threshold for inner pages must be higher...my guess.

It may just be a matter of doing twice as much work to get the inner page to overcome the obstacles inherent in Google's algorithm, which keep inner pages from ranking as easily.

      Who knows...?

      Thanks for the response.

Google will rank the most valuable page on a website, which is usually your home page (by way of internal link structure + external links etc.)

We are working on getting an internal page ranked for a VERY competitive keyword, and it looks like we need to get about 3 times the value in links to get it ranking well.

This has been my experience as well. The inner pages will rank, it just takes more work.

This takes sooooo much more work than the home page. You must build a lot of high quality inlinks to that page, and throughout the rest of your site for that matter. Deep linking also supports your home page rank standings.

Is your internal linking structure done correctly? Does it look natural?

Do you have <no follow> outbound links?

It's not only about inbound links!

      Look how wikipedia does it.
